I wanna try to do something crazy with my card, I want to install either a geminii or a tuniq tower to my 3870 and see what the temps are

why, no reason really

would this be worth it, I think I could kill the card in the process

Well if you can do it, it'd be great. Problem is that you'd end up breaking the card unless you have some extra support and you'd have to make your own special mounting to work with it

sounds like a good idea for the power hungry monster cards like the 8800gtx's and 2900xtx's.

you are on a mission my friend.... and you must go through and give us the results. it's not exactly uncharted territory as i have seen cpu coolers on gpu's before. BUT something so extravagant as a Tuniq tower or geminii sounds interesting.

yeah, it will definitely be hard considering the weight, I think it might be heavy enough to snap the card in half

I was thinking that maybe a support bar would help
kinda like the ones on xfx cards but on 2 sides instead of one

after thinking about it, the geminii might rip off the section with the GPU, so I have to think of something else

one thing is for sure though, the geminii can't be installed with the cases side on

maybe there is another cooler to use, the gemenii and the tuniq might be so big that they don't fit at all

You could probably just devise a post made from some non-conductive material. IMO that would be your best option.

I was thinking about this for a long time now.
Just make sure that the cooler is secured in place and doesn't pull down the video card.

well, i mounted it on my 6600 first and after it booted, it worked for 4 minutes and then it failed.

why. . . because it was to heavy and pulled some pins that connected the gpu from the video cards pcb, I sent it in for repairs though, Im glad its an xfx, they said they could fix it.

Im still gonna try to install another cooler on it though, I have an old asus cooler that did wonders on my old e4400

I think the problem wasn't the gemenii but the weight of the 2 fans was just overkill

id suggest if you do this, to brace it to the bottom of the case, or it will tear your PCIe slot off.

i remember seeing a guy put a heavy ass cooler on his 6600 a long time ago, and he used legos to support the cooler itself, rather than the card.

EDIT: i must admit, i've often toyed with the idea of attaching a cpu cooler to a video card. the only thing actually stopping me is the lack of a certain drill bit...

cable ties (zip ties) will get it on i reckon, and be able to hold it in place to not bend the card, back in the day i put a socket A cpu cooler on an agp 6600GT, worked beaut, never saw over 50 degrees, bit if your putting sommin that big on...nice.

ill be interested in how it works out, cable ties ftw.

A quick pic of the cooler i will use this time on the 3850 using the bracket that comes with the card before I run out for today, I have to pick up some extra heatsinks later

its really big but it did an incredible job cooling my old 7950gt

since I bought a new fan, I will have to modify the fan to get it to mount in the computer though, I just had to have red

all this only at the cost of 4 slots

P.S. I don't recommend anyone try this

na, its an asus p5a3, a cooler thats not very well known but is a extremely good budget cpu cooler

it can even be used on quad cores
