I'd guess the 10600K is faster in games, if CPU limited, obviously. HOWEVER, if I already own the 3800X I wouldn't bother. (looking at your specs)
If you're running games that are GPU limited it's pointless to swap.

Save your money for a better upgrade later on. Upgrading CPU because GPU's are out of stock isn't a good idea.

Also, your board works with Ryzen 5000, that's the upgrade path to go, but still not worthwhile.

Now I saw your display, 1440p. Combined with the 2070S, I would not change.

Sell your 3800x (Make sure you update the BIOS first) and add it to the money you were going to use on the 10600 and buy a 5800x or 5600X. Actually a 5600X would be best.

Hello there.

If you had a choice between a i5-10600K or Ryzen R7 3800X for gaming, surfing and internet stuff. What would you pick and why ?

My recommendation would be the KF version of the 10600K, which is on sale on newegg right now for $209

Intel Core i5-10600KF 4.1 GHz LGA 1200 BX8070110600KF Desktop Processor - Newegg.com

Why chose this one?

-Substantially cheaper than a 3800X
-Simple to OC to well over 5.0GHz (so easy, a caveman could do it)
-Equivalent performance vs 10600K, with a lower price tag.
-Assuming you wont need integrated graphics (F model denotes a disabled GPU)
-Although a new Z490 (LGA1200) motherboard is required, Intel has indicated that LGA1200 will remain compatible with Rocket Lake CPUs.
-Get 9900K like performance (or better) all the way up to six cores
-Intel's best CPU in the i5 lineup in terms of the cost/performance ratio
-More fun to OC and tune than Ryzen

Well looks like he junped the gun and bought a i5-10600k with a z490. And the bios says it can support the 11th gen so at least he got upgrade choices

10600K, no question. AMD pricing is totally out of whack as of right now. Be mindful about your Z490 though, some bottom-of-the-barrel shit cannot handle the OC.

Should have bought the 10700F + B560 board instead, Intel is getting very generous with their pricing now LOL.

I'd do something like this for about the same price when you factor in motherboard and cpu cooler.

Hello there.

If you had a choice between a i5-10600K or Ryzen R7 3800X for gaming, surfing and internet stuff. What would you pick and why ?

I would get a 10700k/11600k I would not go AMD at this point even though I use a 5600x, unless you already have a GPU. If you do not have a GPU already you literally can't even build with AMD unless you go with an APU model, so my pick would actually be the 10700k for the cores, backup iGPU. PCIe 4.0 doesn't even matter (for 11 gen Intel) and won't for a few years given the bleak chip shortages and balancing out the overall perfomance of a gaming rig.

10700k or 11600k, or even the 11400. AMD prices are currently whack. R5 3600 $209.00, 3600X $240.00 ish. 5600x averages $365.00. There is no R7 5800 just an R7 5800x that is overpriced and no iGPU with that. 5900X totally out of reach.

10700k. 8 cores, respectable speed and a good price and it's available. To directly answer your OP between a 3800X and a 10600k I would go 10600k or 10700k.

Intel actually is good value right now, because they don't rely on others to make their chips and their 14nm has insanely high yields. Funny how things turn out sometimes. AMDs prices are jacked up and TSMC can't deliver.

I'd get 10600K or 10700K over a Ryzen 3000. You need a 5000 series to beat these overall, especially in gaming.

3800x will be a better all rounder especially if your gaming at 4K as the processor won't make a difference.

get the i-10600k for gaming, its a simple choice. the 3800x will cost more and you will need to get good ram in order to get the most out of it. you can stick essentially any ram in an intel board and it will work.

As a person with 3700x go with 10600k more stable fps and better experience.

Intel still gives best gaming fps and smoothness.

The 10600k is by far better value than those two AMD chips. It's almost half the price.

Not enough info, does he play at 1080P/1440P or 4K?

What FPS games does he play?

Does he do anything else but game?

What is his current GPU?

Will he keep the system for more then a yr? or is he one of these "gamers" that change there system as much as they change there underwear?

Till those questions are answered there isnt a real answer to your question.
