It's not a game which supports many thread CPUs like i7's with 8 threads or more - it will simply run on 3-4 cores then and max the CPU out (not the SMT part of it) resulting in a bottleneck. A low clocked Sandy isn't doing the job - not for a GTX 1070 at least, it needs more CPU power. Comparisons with Skylake or Haswell at same clocks are useless, because IPC is much higher. OP should follow my advice.

You're right, at 3.7 Turbo, with MSAA at 2x or off, I was getting much higher peak frame rates and a higher average FPS, but the temps were at 98C to achieve that on the CPU, so it seems like my FPS with all the settings the way I had them are being limited by my CPU. On the video I posted originally in this thread, he was getting better FPS because his clock was at 4.4GHz, mine is at 3.4GHz.

Buddy, all you need is a decent tower cooler for about 20 bucks to fix those temperature problems of your CPU - after you could let the CPU stretch its legs and enjoy a proper gaming system. Just saying, seems you already pretty much made up your mind.

Thanks -- ok, quick question, the 1070 is still in the box not shipped and yet and I'm willing to take apart the case and install a new fan with the AS ceramique I still have back from 2010 (or I'll buy new if need to, but I don't think it goes bad sealed in the syringe?) which fan would you think would work the best, the evo 212?

Also, what would you recommend to clean off the old tim, 90% alcohol?

Lastly, in an ambient temp of 75F, when I played GTA V on full turbo on all the cores, I hit 98C on two and I think 95C on the other two, do you think I'd get close to 70C with a better fan like the EVO 212?

Or maybe the Cryorig H7?

Cloth and 90% alcohol. Hyper 212 will be awesome for that. I think around 60 load, considering stock clocks and voltages.

Thanks, any experience with the Cryorig H7? It looks like on my Antec 900, I maybe still be able to use my window fan.

Nop, but I've used a Hyper 212+ in Push-Pull config in mine, worked great

Thanks, also, looks like a coffee filter may help, which I have a lot + the alcohol.

Removing the fan looks simple enough:

And like this guy demonstrates installing the H7, I hopefully wont have to take apart everything, just what I need to, like the rear case cover, the 680 and some of the dangling wires.

Thanks everyone for all your help, I really appreciate it! Even though I didn't reply to everyone, I still read your comments and took what you wrote into consideration, so thanks!

It looks like if I can keep Turbo enabled with the better fan, then the 1070 would meet my needs fine, plus I get a cooler and faster 2600, and plus, my memory is running at it's correct seed, because due to this, I went back into the BIOS and realized I never set profile 1 because I had a issue with the GB board due installing 32GB and having to set the video memory to 512MB. I'll still keep the C1 and C3/C6 states enabled, as I run my machine 24/7, so the power draw does add up in NYC.

I'm going to order from Amazon the Cryorig H7, I'll reply back in about a week with an update.

Turbo enabled, I'd actually turn all c states off, doesnt really make that much of a difference in idle conditions. And some small bclk overclock if possible :)

A simple google tells me you can add aditional x4 multi to the turbo, yielding a Multi of X42 or 4.2GHz

Thanks, I'll try that for a week and see what the power draw is like. I love my SB setup as it's been rock stable and provided close to 6 years of reliable service, maybe I'll skip Zen+ and wait for Zen++ at this rate of breathing new life into this system ;)

However, I'm not gonna do the blck, as I think it affects the whole system and read some nasty things that it can do/affect. Turds on Intel for not using VT-d on the K version....I really wanted that originally....ughhhh.

Benchmark Scores Faster than yours... I'd bet on it. :)
You can get 103 without worry typically. Thats an extra 110+ mhz at 38 multi.

No doesn't get bad, EVO 212 or that Cryorig are both nice, take what you like more or which is cheaper.

Maybe even less. We're talking mild overclocks here, if at all. Generally the CPU will be in safe temperature regions again (100°C is the max, about 60-90°C is absolutely fine imo) and you'll have no throttleing going, improving system performance.

i7 2600 is fine, but only for a few years max, I wouldn't plan long term with it. Plan in a 6 core Ryzen or unlocked i7 for the future, those are the best for gaming.

Great to hear -- yep, my goal is to pass on the Zen and wait for Pinnacle Ridge. I'll put my 680 back in this machine and give it to my son and put the 1070 in the new Ryzen build. By that time, maybe in 4 more years, I expect the caps to start failing and maybe some other parts on the MB....but it is UltraDurable, so we'll find out ;)

A shame though, the CPU has the potential to reach 4.xGHz and can never be achieved because it locked.

One note, I freaked a bit. I REALLY HATE MB Headers. They are a real pain, that and the 24 pin connector, getting in and out, let alone dissembling everything to take out the MB and install it....I bring this up, because after reading reviews on the Cryorig H7 on newegg, someone else with a Antec 900 said they had to do that because it has no motherboard cutout.....LUCKILY, I got the revised version from Newegg that has the cutout. I can tell because the prior version didn't have two elongated holes on the tray for cables, the new one does. It could turn a 30-45* minute project into a 2-3 hour project. Unexpected stuff like the Intel stock cooler takes a lot of time to wiggle out or one pin doesn't unscrew fully from behind so you need pliers and patience, screws don't line up properly, forever to clean the old tim off...etc..., now couple that with MB headers...and everything else.

Indeed, report back when you have the cooler at hand. Increase turbo speed by 4 bins, (I think you already did that, but I'm going for sure here) and also try BCLK overclocking, revert if it's unstable - but it should run well. Also do some game testing when everything is set up and tell me your findings. We get this one solved.

Thanks! Not sure, I couldn't easily find a tool to tell me what my current CPU frequency is running at when I enabled turbo, but it was high enough (voltage wise I assume) to hit 98C, compared to highs in the high 70's without it.

I'm going to try to record it too, and I'll follow-up, if not this weekend, by next weekend.

Thank you again and everyone else for your help!!

Use CPU-Z for that, alternatively the windows task manager does the job too if you have 8.1 or Win 10.

There's nothing wrong with your cpu. I was using an FX8320 to play GTAV with a 1070 and it gets around 60 fps with some tweaks on the setting.

Thanks, I'll get that now, I've been using Core Temp (old version) and CPUID Hardwaremonitor -- ugh, yep, I'm on Win 7.

I ordered two from Amazon, if this goes well on my main box, I'll do the same on my cent os box.

Benchmark Scores Nyooom.
I've ran my GTX 1080 on my 2500k and 3770k on stock and overclocked speeds, and yes - its the stock clocks holding you back.

GTA V is very poorly multi threaded, so it needs the higher clockspeeds. thats about it.
