Hello, this is my very first post at TPU!

I am kinda new to overclocking and just managed to overclock my i7-3930K to 4.4 ghz(1.275 vcore). After running Cinebench R15, I realized that my CPU score actually went from 1151(at stock) to 1090 and my OpenGL score went from 120 to 111. Is this possible? Temperature seems to be stable at about 35c to 45c during normal operation to around 65c to 67c during CPUZ stress test.

Any thoughts?

Welcome to TPU!

It's possible a core or thread did not work correctly. Using a hardware monitor (even Afterburner) can log stats. It will impact the score but to test the stability of each core and thread, it will identify or eliminate that. i.e. in Prime95 CPU testing, a thread can fail but the run will still continue. A thread failing means an unstable overclock.

When you oc cpu you must test it for stability and 1st thing is 30 cycles of intelburn on high after that at least 3-6 hours of prime95 blend and then you can bench.

Okay... I'll d/l both and run them while I am work today. Let's see how that goes. I'll report back to you both.

i found that you can get a lower score in bench tests with a higer clock but voltages just not quite high enough. not saying thats the issue here but it happens.

Yup, I didn't have enough voltage on vcore... Ran Aida64 Extreme(intelburn's warning about extra 30+ temp increase during test scared me) and promptly failed within minutes. Increased voltage to 1.3v and re-ran Aida64. Temperature shot up to 77c on some of the cores but it looks stable so far.... I have heard 80c while stressing the cpu is acceptable but I really don't want to see this high of a temp for my cpu. I kinda knew my CM 212 Evo wasn't quite enough for this cpu but I alrady had the cooler laying around the desk. Going to run Prime95 when I leave for work soon. Will report back later tonight.

I had my old 3930k on 1.35v but it was water cooled. Air coolers will only take you so far.

Just a follow-up question here... I saw the temp on one of the cores jump up to 87c during one of the Prime95 processes before I left this morning but went back down to high 60's and 70's on the next processes. I understand that some processes will seriously torture the cpu but should I start thinking about getting a better air cooler? Water cooling is really not an option for me at this point.

What do you guys think

My advice is to not use the prime95 for longer then 20-30 min while testing it with this cooler....Also its easier to run prime&cinebench in the same time and you will probably see if is it your CPU stable in just a few min(run cinebech 3x time while prime is running)......Also temp bellow 90c while running heavy stress testing it´s not that bad if is it not for long but time&high temp can kill your CPU....

The only thing I use synthetics for is to thermally cycle TIM. Remember when grandpa used to say "Oh the [insert brand name here] is the cadillac of [insert product name here]. It doesn't really apply these days just as using tools when from back when dual core was a big thing on today's modern CPus w/ advanced instruction sets is just not the right tool for the job. I stopped when Id invest time doing 24 hour stable OCs with synthetics and then have them fail under a multitasking application based stress test RoG Real Bench. In addition that 4.6 Ghz OC that failed and was hitting 85C in P95, is only hitting 77C in RB at a higher voltage.

The $45 Scythe Fuma will get ya an extra 11c of cooling for just $15 more than your 212.... and that's more than 2 x 120mm CLC will get ya costing 3 times as much.

Thx for all your advise. I've decided to dial things back and stay at 4.2 ghz in auto turbo mode. And lowered vcore down to 1.25v fixed. It's fluctuating some at load but now my temp is stable at a little over 60c at load/gaming and 40c during normal use. It will hit 70+ during stress test on Aida64 but none of my daily computer usage will see anywhere close to this sort of stress. I was even able to lower the fan speeds without much degradation in performance(1050 in Cinebench15). I figure this is more than enough speed for me and I don't have to worry about getting better cooling. Playing Conan Exile with this setup is super fun with about 70-80 fps at high settings. Thx again everyone and good luck with your pursuit of o/c nirvana!

Remember that stressing your system to 100% with AIDA/Prime is a worst case scenario. It'll never hit those temps under normal usage, and is usually deemed absolutely fine.
