well, is like getting a lamborgini aventador just for going to the grocery store to get bread and milk everymorning and coming back home lower than speed limits, but i hope you enjoy your future build and also never regret of not getting the proper board,

Thank you!
But I would like to illustrate an example: The Witcher III runs at 60 FPS @4ghz, and also runs at 60 FPS @12520GHz. So what's the point?
If the time will come, that something runs only at 59 FPS, then I will buy a Z board, and overclock the hell out of my CPU. Now I didn't have the extra money for the Z.
By the way it was an "emergency update" due to the death of my previous haswell board.

See and that right there is where you've made your mistake.

You wanted it now because you lacked what, 20-30 bucks for a Z board so now in a year's time you will pay a full new Z board anyway. Because the performance of a Skylake CPU at 4 Ghz is not stellar, not at all, and yes, you will run into a CPU bottleneck at some point. Its guaranteed. This is just a quad core.

In the meantime you have a 'meh' board that you can hardly sell for even half price when used, while a Z board would have made you back most of your extra expense whenever you would sell it. Sell it off along with the 6700K and you have a great package deal, even.

So this was not cheaper, really. You have tossed away money and the bottom line is you also lost performance. This was never about e-peen. Just common sense and maybe a bit of patience. 'No money' to buy a Z and 'money' to get a K CPU? No sorry, not making sense.

He's not likely to see 6700k stock bottleneck gtx 980 at 60hz if the cpu was running with decent memory, I see a bigger problem with 2133 ram he picked than with the mobo, 2133 is going to slow the cpu down massively. Plus not getting the z board seems a waste, 6700k can run 4700mhz easily and that +15% is nothing to scoff at.

That 6700 even if it is non K or not overclocked will be a good upgrade from the previous Haswell i5. I don't know why you people are trying to sway him into buying something that he does not want , it's not like an overclocked 6700K would have totally annihilated a stock 6700K , stop making a big fuss about it. And by the time a 6700 wouldn't be enough for a consistent 60fps neither will be an overclocked one.

Oh , how times have changed. :)

sure, when maintenance of that beast comes, you will wish the proper car right! also when snows or the life bring another situation, for example, when you realize that oc could bring extra performance and make your build hold for 1 o 2 years, for example a fellow from here that have tweaked his X58 system beyond limits!!

Thank you!

is always a pleasure to help and contribuite, but there should be another option for a tight budget when building! i have and extra ace!
also consider that prices for Z boards are getting higher when generations pass by, for example my board costs like $90-125 when launched and new, right now you get it used for mostly $150 or so, so is better to expose a budget to work with and seek the best for that penny!

How does this work if you don't mind me asking? Is it a thing in the kernel or... Just a update via windows update? Why not just look up the update and not install it

Finally.. Thank you. This endless debate about overclocking started to frustrate me, especially after the original question was: Is the i7-6700K Skylake CPU fully compatible with Windows 7?

Hate to tell you but about 99% of people that own a PC dont OC.

Yes, but that's covering the peeps who bought their PCs in BestBuy or Walmart or the CFO who buys exclusively from Dell.... In other words ... 2% of this forum's audience.

In 25 years of PC Building, well over 95% select today's equivalent of the 8600k/8700k and Z series MoBos. Even when not overclocking, will recommend Z seroies borads because to save money with a B or H series board, you are going to get a board with substandard LAN / Audio parts. When you start climbing the price rungs to get those features, I have found, historically, that you are in the same price range as Z series boards which throw in more PCIe lanes and the SLI / CF option too.

For example, going to newegg and looking at MSI's lineup of H370 and Z370 for boards with ALC1220

H370 Gaming Pro Carbon is $139
Z370 SLI Plus is $136

For the $3 savings ....

DDR Speed support goes from 2666 to 4000
H370s supports only x16/x4
Support for overclocking if and when one wants to use it
Faster boost clock.

So the build cost comes down to only the $17 difference for the 8700 and 8700 K series CPU.

We get the 4 advantages listed above for a total of $14

Win7 does not have driver for USB included

Yes, I had this problem with one board (can't remember which one) and it took a while to figure it out. I remember that it didn't have any USB 2.0 connections on it.

Considering my 2600K ran and still runs for my friend at 4.6 all day long it was definitely worth spending the extra for a K with Sandy.
Considering non K have hardware virtualization support it was definitely worth not spending the extra for a K with Sandy.

Today I'm going to dismantle my i7-6700K system and box it up for its new owner. I sold it, and both of my i7-7700K systems to the same guy to make room for, and finance the final pieces of the two replacement i7-8700K that are in the works.
This 6700K has been outstanding all along. My two 7700Ks both needed a delid to tame their thermals, and then they ran fast and cool. The 6700K was always a cool running CPU.

Well, at least the OP's keyboard and mouse will still work on his MSI B250 Gaming M3, as long as he uses the pair of USB 2.0 ports below the PS/2 port.

If all of the external USB ports were 3.0, I was going to suggest buying a USB 2.0 bracket on eBay for $3 and plugging it into a header on the motherboard.

If using USB to install, the install disc must be in USB 2.0 as well. That's where the problems begin, since some boards either have no USB 2.0 at all on rear panel, or they do not have enough ports for keyboard/mouse, and drive.

Some brands offer a tool to update an image of Win7 with the proper drivers though that makes all of this a non-issue. Imagine my confusion on getting these boards before the launch, and having to figure this out all for myself... and having a deadline to meet that required I do so. :p It took 4 or 5 installs before I got Windows going. :p

The 6700K was always a cool running CPU.
interesting cuz skylake had a tremendous hot chip batch, most i've installed and tested need a delid for better temps, 2 of them even for stock values,

That hasn't been my experience at all, but these chips are very poor overclockers for sure, and have nearly no turbo, either, so clearly some of them are at their limit. I think nearly 60% of the CPUs I've had time to play with were stuck at 4.3 GHz for all cores, meanwhile the one I kept does 4.7 GHz with less than 1.275V.

I think they pulled out the good chips to be sold as Skylake-X. I mean, look at how those chips clock... it's a night-and-day difference with SKylake on X299 compared to Z170/Z270.

agreed, they all are poor overclockers, as stated before, most i've installed were totally crap chips, iddle 55-60C and max close to 90's, with Water 2.0 performer AIO using 2 fans on most i've tested when had my bench case, delid bring better thermals, but the chip itself is weak for OC,

3 of my customers got some skylake chips from silicon lottery, 2 were stock, no delid(stated in the box) the other was delided and 5.0GHZ capable, well, we did tests, tweaks and never gone beyond 4.95GHZ at 1.28V cuz temps were high even with WC, i guess you are on the point with golden skylake chips

I set mine to run @4.6 GHz. and cooled it with a 240mm AIO. (with four Cougar Vortex PWM fans on the radiator)
It's been like the energizer bunny of CPUs for me. I got about 60c in stress testing and that was fine by me.

Later on, when I got the two 7700Ks, they had horrible heat output.
Not only did I de-lid them, but I also used a Copper IHS with a larger surface area for enhanced cooling when I re-lidded them.
I got about 20c-26c lower temps with them after that.

One of them always got about 200MHz more speed than the other one. I don't know why.
Note that I didn't get faster speeds with them after a de-lid, just cooler temps.
