Hi guys , so now i'am saving up for an upgrade for my pc , i will upgrade to 8gb of ram and i will keep my 750 TI for a while , but i am really confused about which CPU should i go for , the I5 2550k or the i7 870 (i know they are quite old but this is what i can afford and i prefer to buy an old i7 or i5 instead of a new stupid pentium).
As i know , all what games need is 4 cores and 8 threads and a fast clock speed , the i7 has 4 cores and 8 threads while the i5 has only 4 threads but a higher base clock ( turbo frequencys for both CPUs are very close,3.7 and 3.8 GHz) so it's really confusing me .

Note : i will pair the i7 with GA-H55M-S2 and the I5 with GA-H61M-DS2 , both DDR3 8 GB RAM 1600 MHz (4x2) + i may sell my 750 ti and buy a used 760.

I would pick the i5 because the i7 is *OLD* and not overclockable. the 2550k is newer and overclockable but the board you pair it with will do you no favours. You wont be able to get the best out of the 2550k with such a junk tier board.

Te 2550k should absolutely destroy the 870 though.

What’s your budget ?
Around 160$ (without a gpu , only a mobo , ram , and a cpu). There will be a specific budget for a GPU , but now i am not thinking about it.

And that's the problem , i can't afford a mobo that supports OC , everyone says that the 2550K was a legendary CPU for overclocking and it can hit 5Ghz easily.

The i7 is overclockable through the FSB as it's Lynnfield. The board isn't the best fit for it, but it should still be up for a bit of a push.

Honestly both options aren’t the best in any means. Both are mediocre boards, very slow RAM for modern games, 2GB sticks isn’t recommended over 4GB Sticks, and both CPUs are pretty old and not nearly as fast as current CPUs.

Another option is a Ryzen Quad, B350 Mobo, and 8GB of RAM or a Slightly newer used i3 Haswell or up

As i said this is the best thing i can afford + look at my current system specs , i mean this is going to be a huge jump. Also i just made a mistake the ram speed is not 1333 MHz , it's 1600 , i know......no difference.

Just found good deals for Z68 mobos , but the problem is that they are all ATX which doesn't fit in my case.

Thanks but , dual core ? Aaah idk , btw what do u think about the 6 core FX 6300(the heater LOL)?
It’s actaully a 2C/4T so basically the new gen i3

But it should be more than enough paired with a GTX 750 Ti to hold you over plus with a newer plateform you always have the option to upgrade to a Kaby Lake i7 or i5

Sorry to say but FX from AMD was straight garbage and I owned all of them from bulldozer to pile driver. Even at 5.3GHz my Fx-8350 couldn’t match my i7-4770 @4.2GHz paired with a R9 290X and GTX 780

p55 is overclockable for the 1156 platform and p67, z68, and z77 is overclockable for the 1155 platform. P67 is rare because it was only around for 4-6 months before z68 came out, and the whole Cougar Point thing that happened makes P67 parts even more elusive. There is also the forgotten z75 chipset but that only existed on a couple boards.

The 2550k is a rare CPU and it's supposed to overclock better than the regular 2500k. The 2550k should be able to do 4.6ghz to 4.8ghz (maybe a little bit higher), while the old Core i7-870 would do about 4.2ghz. There is also a 10%-15% IPC gain between the 1st and 2nd Generation so that gives the 2550k another advantage.

Don't underestimate the current Pentium processors because there is 20% to 25% IPC gain between 2nd Gen and the current 6th, 7th, and 8th Gen parts. Although, it's hard to recommend one of these since you'd have to buy new RAM which would costs more than either a Pentium g5400 or a budget b360 board. If you have the DDR3 then you might as well look at 1150 or 1155 parts.

I agree with @Durvelle27 DON´T go for FX today. I was already frustrated with it when it was new. If you game on it, prepare for stutter. It´s far worse then the pentium, maybe only better in pure rendering or number crunch but I´m not even sure on that since you will pay with 4x as much power and heat.

Well i am not underestimateing the Pentium G series but most games today demands 4 cores , also i think those 1st and 2nd gen cpus can easily wreck that pentium.

My 2 cents; Save just a bit more and go for a Ryzen 5, unless you are running Windows 7, then go for an older Sandy Bridge i7. There is even the possibility of a Xeon based system, but without overclocking.

Benchmark Scores Don't know any benchmark. It runs good enough for me.
So you want to upgrade you pc in your system spec? For me I recommend buying a core 2 quad or the xeon 771 with lga 775 mod. Go for whichever are cheaper. I just look up ebay for q6600 that you can get for $20. It would not be as massive a jump of going to first gen core i cpu or 2nd core i sandy bridge you wanted but it is really a cheap way of extending life to an old system.

For now I recommend a new ryzen build or even lower end coffee lake build if you really wanted a "true" upgrade. It would not cost much at all. I would only go i5 2550k or related sandy bridge if legacy windows are important like win 7 and below as those boards support them.

the 2550k would be a lot faster than the 870, especially when overclocked

You could probably save up and get much newer hardware if possible, without needing the added cost/time of cooling and overclocking

Save your money and get a $15 E54X0. While behind a 2500K, it's the fraction of the cost, you just have to do an lga 775 to 771 mod.

I don't really think it's worth investing that much in old tech, especially if your on a tight budget. The E5450 will be more than enough CPU power for a 750.
Wait a few months for a Ryzen 3/5 when you can afford it.

Edit - I just realized you have a really old mobo and very little ram also, so if it means replacing all that too, it's likely not worth it. I'm sure you could pick up a 2nd hand Ryzen, mobo and ram for not much more.

Well i am not underestimateing the Pentium G series but most games today demands 4 cores , also i think those 1st and 2nd gen cpus can easily wreck that pentium.
You keep forgetting that the Pentium G is a Dual Core with/ HT so it has 2C/4T not 2C/2T like the older Pentiums.

And you are wrong. The new Pentiums easily outperform the Sandy i5s and can OC as well

Given your non-existent budget -- beggars cant be choosers. Id recommened an i3 7350k or 8350k in a heartbeat but you cant even afford them anyway..

these two videos apply to you....

You can save a lot of money since you already have some of the parts you could migrate over. But these videos are pretty much you in a nutshell. and even the final point at the end of the second video applies to you.

Better option would be buying used AMD Ryzen 3 1200, B350M motherboard, basic G.Skill or Team 1 x 8 GB DDR4 2133 or 2400 for around 200 € or less.

Replacing GTX 750 Ti with GTX 760 is plain ridiculous and complete waste of money. An upgrade from GTX 750 Ti would be R9 380X 4GB or RX470 4 GB.

No , i don't want to pay another 1$ for my current system .
