Hello everyone.

Major problems at my HQ. I have i7 920 C0/C1 and Scythe Mugen 2 and it seems that the cooler doesn't cool properly. Just check out the screenshot...

And that's not all. Those temps go up to 81C after 5 minutes of prime. The voltage at 3600MHz is only 1.28v! If that's high then I'm a gorilla.

I am sure that my cooler is attached properly. I have a Cooler Master HAF casing - very high airflow.. Is it possibile that it's the CPU's fault or is it me? :banghead:

Any ideas someone? Has this happened to anyone else?

Those temps are typical for air cooling. You might get a bit better temps with push / pull setup.

Best way to decrease temps is to just turn off HT.

Not true. My friend has a 965EE @ 4,3GHz and at full load his temps are maximum 72C

There's so many elements to temps. Believe me when I say your temps are typical for air.

What cooler is your friend using? Without knowing your friends setup, his ambient temps, it not a apples to apples comparison with your setup.

Thats actually pretty decent! Your friend must keep his PC room at 65or less.

As others have said those temps are fine for an air setup for an i7 at those speeds.

If you wanna get cooler buy a D0 stepped chip ;)

Although a lot of people have said it's okay, I do think it's a bit on the high side. I have a C0 i7 running on air with a TRUE120 and I'm getting 38-40 degree idle and about 70-71 degree Prime temperatures at 4GHz, 1.34V. Maybe you should check your thermal paste? Or maybe the cooler has shifted a bit or isn't making 100% proper contact. Also, even little things like the type of cleaner you used before mounting the heatsink or whether you touched the cpu etc could make a couple of degrees difference. :p

It's this kind of post that causes alot of confusion. I'm not doubting your max load at 4ghz of only 71C. But you need to be more specific. HT on/off, Turbo on/off, ambient temps, casing, type of fan used, HSF cooler modifications, Which Prime95 test: Small FTT or Blend(up to 5C difference with the 2 tests), Did you do this in Winter? When you make a claim like this, and not give all the specifics, you can see why threads like this one appear all the time.

Try remounting the cooler yet? Best bet it to take it off and look at the compound and see what contact was like and adjust if necessary.

I agree with t-ski, quickest and easiest way to start off the hunt for better temps.

Mugen 2 is definitely not THAT bad! And I wasn't trying to directly compare...

HT on/off, Turbo on/off, ambient temps, casing, type of fan used, HSF cooler modifications, Which Prime95 test: Small FTT or Blend(up to 5C difference with the 2 tests), Did you do this in Winter? Ok, let's see: HT on, Turbo off, ambient temps of around 22 degrees (it's winter yes), casing is in sig, Thermalright FDB fans, no mods, AS5 paste, burnt in, no lapping, Blend Prime95 and OCCT both go about 71 degrees (bit higher on Linpack)... Happy? ;)
More to the point was that I thought his temperatures were a bit on the high side, I didn't mean to directly compare our temps! And since our hardware is vastly different, you can only give an opinion in such a case unfortunately. More like an educated guess on how hot it should be. Mine was that his i7 could be cooler from what I know from his hardware and other people's experiences I've heard. Let's leave it at that now don't we? :p
