Asking in relation to gaming, specifically Fallout 76 which I have already pre-ordered.

I have the 930 (see my system specs), which runs Fallout 4 fine. But I know it's old and I'm worrying. Especially since I'm a bit out of touch regarding the performance of newer processors.
The rest of my system is more than fine otherwise. But to change processor I'd have to change motherboard.. ram.. and I can't spend money right now.

Please tell me I'll be OK for this game? :ohwell:

You'll be fine imo. Are you able to squeeze more out of that core i7 930? more mhz? If not, you could opt for trying to get a xeon equivalent that are great overclockers (seen them as high as 4.5 with a good mobo) which would make a very cheap upgrade.

The requirements seems odd though. Core i7 4790 or a Ryzen 5 1500x? I would assume the core i7 4790 is better than Ryzen 1500x, especially since fallout 76 shouldn't really be optimized anyway for multicore like fallout 4 is (creation engine limitations).

The last time I saw anyone have serious CPU performance issues was in a game that required AVX, and he was using a CPU that didn't have it. Not sure if your chip has AVX, or if FO76 even calls for it...

X58 cpu's dont have avx support. But i think you will be fine, depending on what fps you are after off cause. If 120 fps+ is your goal, you are out of luck. Is 60 fps+, you shut be fine.

Else there are the option for a cheap 6 core xeon. I took the jump from an i7 920 to my current i7 980x. Its worfh it, my game fps got higher and the 6 core chips runs les hot mean more headroom for higher overclock as well. Think about it at least.

With i7 980x at 4.43 ghz i run far cry 5 at ultra setting and still main tain 60 fps+

A little tip to boost your fps. Make sure uncore if i am correct its called on gigabyte motherboard. Is set to aroud 3600 mhz. Be aware that if you change this. Cpu voltage might need to be upped a bit or two to be fully stable a gain. Bit when its stable, your fps shut be more stable and maybe also higher.

the i7 4790 would be much faster, but a cheap Xeon should be able to keep close behind it

I have the 930 (see my system specs), which runs Fallout 4 fine. But I know it's old and I'm worrying.
You can easily bump your performance by 50% and reduce heat and power by getting any Westmere Xeon CPU.

x5650 is the cheapest (can be found under $15), and in most cases can hit 4GHz with little effort. Mine did 4.2GHz stable at 1.3V vCore on air (Thermalright Ultra 120) and never went past 80C at full load.
Single-threaded performance still sucks, but in multithreaded it kicks ass.

x5670 or x5675 is also cheap and is probably your best option. Right now you can buy one on eBay (or whatever is your local equivalent) for around $30-35. Locally I can probably get one for ~$20.
This puppy can hit 4+GHz pretty much guaranteed. Some samples can get there w/ less than 1.3V vCore, but it depends on luck more than anything. At 1.4V maybe as high as 4.3-4.5.

x5690 is the best for OC(due to higher multiplier), but it's also expensive as hell for an old CPU ($80 and up).

As an afterthought: if you are already thinking about upgrading your whole system, then you should do it. It might perform adequately, but 1366 is over 8 years old and most of the components on your motherboard (and probably CPU itself) are nearing their imminent failure... more so with overclocking...

The last time I saw anyone have serious CPU performance issues was in a game that required AVX, and he was using a CPU that didn't have it. Not sure if your chip has AVX, or if FO76 even calls for it...
Those xeons don't have AVX, but I'm almost certain that FO76 won't require it.

I had the same board as you - BIOS update using the @bios tool on windows - DO NOT put it on a usb then flash - I wasted time on mine trying that, And get a x5650 - It's a massive upgrade over the 930 I had previously before I sold the system.

Only the x5650 makes sense here. A cheap drop in replacement CPU with more cores on a newer process that should clock higher and put out less heat and draw less power is a viable upgrade for such an old (but still good) system... but anything more and it's not gonna be worth it. I also wouldn't upgrade right now (other than the x5650) either until Intel whips out new 10nm chips (hopefully with hardware spectre/meltdown fixes) or AMD whips out Zen 2 in full force.

AVS has nothing to do with games other than that terrible...horrible anti piracy program Denuvo. If the games have it, then you could be out of luck unless they patch the game to bypass AVS which most to all games do. Even Assassins Creed Odyssey is patching it.

Some x58 motherboard can take x56xx xeon still even thow they are not official supported.

Else xeon w3680/3690 arent a bad chiose either. Basic so are these two just rebranded i7 980x/990x cpu's. They even has unlocked multiplier as well.

I don't think I've ever seen an LGA1366 board that wouldn't take an x56** CPU (at least the ones w/ BIOS update for 32nm CPU compatibility, which is almost every board).
Manufacturers don't list lots of things in QVL and comp. sheets. For example his board and lots of others can support up to 48GB DDR3, but per consumer spec everyone still lists 24GB as max.

well, if one is worried about compatibility of the processor with the board, then get the W3680:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-W368...h=item3faa90bb17:g:Fj8AAOSwiO9bkD7o:rk:1:pf:0

Unlocked multiplier. Seen these overclock past 4ghz fine. 6 core 12 threads.

I didn't realize AVX had anything to do with Dunguvo. And here I thought games were taking advantage of a high performance instruction set... :banghead:

Well, I only learned that when reading the article about why Assassins Creed Odyssey required AVX, as it was used for Denuvo. Hence why they can patch it out easily. Really, most games apparently that required it, were patched so it wouldn't need it. And they ran fine. And it was stated that they expected the cracked executable would allow the game to run on older CPU's without AVX and possibly better cause it would remove Denuvo. But that was all in the air.

OP update first your mobo bios then get yourself some of the 6 core Westmere Xeons(15$-50$) then OC them as much as you can most of them should hit easily 3,8Ghz-4Ghz which should be enoguh for smooth gaming...GL

Both of these processors have 4 cores and 4 more virtual cores. Ryzen has a slightly better IPC, but Core i7 4790K will be higher clocked, i guess that is why they are comparable anyway. I am more offended by the fact that GTX 780 is compared to a ''relative shit'' R9 285, when GTX 780 is just 10 % behind GTX 970 in performance across all game average.

The last time I saw anyone have serious CPU performance issues was in a game that required AVX, and he was using a CPU that didn't have it. Not sure if your chip has AVX, or if FO76 even calls for it...

I love the sarcasm here.

No sarcasm there... ask @Durvelle27, he's the guy I was referencing. He was running Battlefield 1, which calls for AVX, on a chip that didn't have it. Everything else performed reasonably well, given that processor's age. At the time of writing, I wasn't sure if the i7 930 had AVX (looking it up, it doesn't), but I'm still not sure if FO76 uses it... but if it does, it wouldn't be too much of a jump to guess that it would run poorly on a system that doesn't have it.

Sure, we love to split hairs about the differences between Ryzen and Coffee Lake in game performance, for example, or compare the latest Intel generation to the previous ones, as we have for years, but that case with (I believe it was an Athlon II) which didn't have AVX in a game that called for it was something else. Ryzen giving 110FPS vs Coffee Lake giving 120FPS isn't a serious issue... but that game on that chip ran really bad. Fact is even Bulldozer would be fine for most gamers, unless you want super high FPS all the time...
