not really happy with this cpu. knew it wasn't that good before I bought it but got it cheap.
my old i5 2500k seemed to perform better. or am I expecting too much?

attempted to overclock last night by copying a guide of someone who had pretty much the same setup as me.
my pc failed to boot into windows saying 'an operating system wasn't found'

have sorted it now by repairing the boot files in cmd. not sure if the overclock affected this but it would seem so.

I know it requires a bit of tinkering in the bios to get good stability, but want a bit of advice really as well without messing things up.

have seen these cpus hit 4.0ghz.

or do I just buy a better cpu??

Get some of the 6 core Xeon ASAP for that X58 platform....they are cheap(X5650=20$)and way more efficient + you will have 2 more cores and 4 more threads....they also OC easily on 4Ghz+

I7 940 is a hot (130w) 45nm CPU

Westmere is 32nm and 95w and as said +2core/4 threads.

http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Xeon-X5650-vs-Intel-Core-i7-940/m355vsm606
Yep....well some of those Xeons can work even on 80W really depend of their stock clock and OC :toast:

Yea i was looking at them last night actually
There is really no reason why you should not switch on Xeons...just make sure to update the bios on your Asus P6T Deluxe

wheres the best place to buy one

amazon has one for 131£

ebay maybe...a refurbished on for about 50£
You can find them really anywhere just search for some of the:X5650,X5660,X5670........majority of them are in between 20$-50$ depend of their stock speed but when you have good mobo you can OC any of them easily.....My E5645 standing strong on 4,1Ghz for every day use.....and if you visit our Xeon Owners Club you will see that other people OC this 6-core Xeons all the way up to the 5Ghz....

Don't look, buy. The aforementioned X5650 is a great CPU, as is the X5660, X5670, X5675 and X5680. The last one is a bit pricey sometimes. The 50 or 60 will give the best value for OCing.
wheres the best place to buy one
In the UK I'm not sure, but Ebay is generally a great place for used CPU's.

in my opinion, a lot of people who switch from the 2500K ,experience differing levels of disappointment ( depending on what CPU they switch to ). I moved forward a few generations to an i7, and it was totally unnoticeable as far as improvement in performance. Everybody who bought those chips when they released were blessed with five or more years of spectacular performance, but the other side of that coin is that we were also spoiled with spectacular performance

Thats because I5 2500K have strong IPC(even today)which is important for gaming however the problem is lacks of additional cores/threads for"today"standards.....tho' 4 cores is still OK for gaming...

Funny thing, I moved from a 5820k to an X5680 on my personal system, and while I noticed some differences in certain programs, it was shocking how well the Xeon performed in comparison to it's newer sibling. No regrets and this will last me for some time.

Do some research before buying- it appears that the Asus P6T in your specs doesn't officially support Xeon's:

https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/P6T_Deluxe/HelpDesk_CPU/

Note that even if it does work, some boards can't overclock a Xeon
Can answer that one as I've used a very similar board with a Xeon Quad recently. The Xeon's aren't officially supported, but the microcode for them is present in the bios firmware and they can be used the same as any of the i7 Extreme chips.

https://www.asus.com/supportonly/P6T7 WS SuperComputer/HelpDesk_CPU/

While that is the workstation version of that series of board, the firmware's have much the same features, microcode and support the same CPU ranges, just not officially for the non-workstation versions.

@stuartb04
Make sure you update to the current bios revision while on your current cpu but after which you're golden.

No worries Xeons should work on Asus P6T...he just need to update his bios.....
"should" being the key word- better off imho to buy an i7-970 or 980X since they will definitely work and aren't as expensive as they used to be.

*paid around $100 for the 980X in one of my rigs

Well....those Xeons are identical as I7 and I personally will always go for the cheapest Variant the difference is only the multiplier, especially If your goal is to hit around 4Ghz-4,2Ghz(on Air) you can do that almost on any of those chips with some better mobo and a bit of luck on silicon lottery :D....If you really want to do WaterCooling and "Insane"Speeds then he can go for I7 980x or some of the higer clock Xeons......

Funny thing, I moved from a 5820k to an X5680 on my personal system, and while I noticed some differences in certain programs, it was shocking how well the Xeon performed in comparison to it's newer sibling. No regrets and this will last me for some time.
I switched last year from AMD FX 8300 and it was a BLAST since then.....those Xeons are just in other league and still relevant by todays standards.......

My P6TD Deluxe works absolutely fine with a X5650, just make sure you update your BIOS to the latest version before you install it, as it might not boot up.
