Hmmm ok. I was thinking at least $500. I know the performance is very similar to a 2600k but what about when things get hex core threaded? Do i save me money 4 sandy-e?

Would you like us to discuss if you need an i7 990X in the first place?

If you need it, the most hassle-free and not too expensive way to have a hex would be to buy an i7 970 for 380$ shipped

if you want a cpu upgrade, go sandy all the way. that chip runs hotter, sucks more power and underperforms. by the time 6 threads become a norm, the chip will be obsolete. for the price of it, you can pick up a decent mobo + 2500k. even those are better

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/288?vs=142

in reality though, that 930 at 4.2 is well enough. i'd get a third 6950/90 instead

also, you have no use for Sandy-e if your objective is gaming. its going to be the 6 core platform for multi threads. Sandy is the way to go for gaming

Well its to basically have the BEST! Ive been reading mixed reviews of the 970 how sum oc and sum dont. With the 990x its and oc demon. I still am considering a 970 though but the 990x would be nice.

If performance is an issue for 6 threaded things, consider SB-E

It will be more expensive though

OHHHH it is only to have the "BEST"... 4-core SB-E might be the answer for you then IMO. I'm probably going down that road too

What do you mean they are going on display? and TBH, extreme CPUs are overrated IMO. If you aren't needing the extra threads, you really have no reason to go i7 970 or 990X except e-peen.

I suggest donating that extra money you have, it will make you feel much better than just e-peen :p

jokes aside... 4-core lga 2011, seriously look at it

look, the "best" cpu right now is the 2600 or 2700k. those chips are a waste of money unless you dont have any other option. buying an extreme chip was never a good idea to begin. get a sandy board with a 2500k, it will be MUCH better in any way. games dont even go past 4 cores properly, and the sandy chip does it a lot cooler. unless of course you want to act like an uninformed idiot and buy whatever has the highest number

"collecting" is nothing more than throwing away money on junk you will never use. anyway, i'd give this a little read

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/core-i7-3960x-x79-performance,3026-15.html

Sandy-E isnt suitable for gaming chips. as for Ivy, it'll take a bit long for them to finish it off. so if you want something with good balance right now, Sandy is the best option. and probably will leave to be for the time being

Since LGA 2011 is approaching, the price is falling. As I said, 425$ is probably the max you should consider, with 450$ for a golden chip

go ahead man, what do i care then? why am i here? blow it away, get the 6-core just because you like it, think its higher quality and find it to be more valueable when it underperforms against Sandy. make sure you get the 990x too.

Cool thanks mate ill have to think about it. I suppose i can bid 450 for it and if i get out bidded so what. Its not like i desperatly need it. Its just hard not to give up a $1000 cpu for $500 regardless of performance. I suppose ive just always wanted an EE!

yeah and make sure you get a core 2 extreme along with it to add to your dusty shelf collection. cause it cost over a grand and now can be found for 1/4 price of it. so it definately could NOT be passed!

Over 1/4 of my income when I work, whatever I can when I don't. My parents also donate 1/4 of their income etc.

I'm a university student so it is hard for me to donate much at all recently, but I make it a point that once I have a stable job, at least 1/4 of my income will go towards donation. I also research deeply about which organizations do the best job with my money

If I can donate a few thousand a year, you sure as hell can donate 300$ LOL! But my ploint is that anything is better than wasting money, might as well go to donating. I won't force you to keep your own money, but might as well go for something better than a CPU you will never use, you want to part from some money? Go ahead, but put it in something that is useful, else keep it

fyi, if you want a yorky for your P45, look for a Q9550. those have the best E0 stepping. run more efficient and clock further. extreme chips are old C1 steps that're slow and power hungry, hotter running. honestly.
