Let's hope they keep it in a classified location or build something like the Black Mesa. Else who knows a few Virgin Atlantic flights would lose their 'virginity' in the hands of terrorists.

wow... sorry candle, you just opened a whole can of dumb.

no, ive actully seen better scores with a quad than a dual at same clock speeds even with core2 procs. Im well aware less CPU usage per core, but superPI would have to support multi threading for it to improve on a quad over dual simple as that

Super PI Mod

Super PI Mod 1.5 calculates pi to a specific number of digits after the decimal point. We elected to use 1 million digits (1M). The result is given in the form of the time taken to finish the calculation (in seconds). However, it is a single-threaded benchmark, so it's only useful as an indication of how fast these processors are with older, single-threaded applications.

it has zero multicore support. NONE. research it, google it, do whatever - hell, how about you run it, and disable one core to the program in task manager.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_PI
Super PI was single threaded,, so its relevance as a measure of performance in the current era of multi-core processors was diminishing quickly.
Super PI is now, with its latest revamping, multi-core capable. It is now titled 'multiPI'.

i really am tiring of you making all these claims and never having evidence to back them up. how you think its alright to make false claims, without even a 30 second google is totally beyond me.

Sorry but what is the point of this? Is it not good enough that the whole internet is spread over multiple servers with multiple redundancies? What happens if this would go down? The internet goes bye-bye? What about bandwidth concerns...that's alot of bandwidth needed. Also, if the whole internet was concentrated in one computer, what happens if someone attacks it? It's kinda pointless imo. The internet's good because it's redundant and spread over a bunch of servers.

Exactly. :shadedshu This is completely pointless and a waste of energy, time and money. It'd be much better suited to crunch something useful, like running a BOINC project or Folding@Home. I believe the results achieved with such a monster machine would benefit us all if we (or loved ones) are ever struck with a crippling disease like cancer etc.

Forget processing power and memory, what would be its required network bandwidth?

~8EBps? (eight exabytes per second)?

Hardly. AMS-IX handles just around 1Tbps (Terabit per second) currently. It's the most important IX currently. Not sure if it's also the largest, amongst the top though.

Why does IBM want to do this? MAybe they're in cahoots with the RIAA or something and want to make a super-dooper web-filter/monitor? I can see this as the only reason for such an expensive and otherwise seemingly pointless project.

They just want to show they can process the net to get some hype. Even if they wanted to the governments,IT rivals and civil liberty groups would put a stop to it. I think most everyone is against one party running the net
It would be pretty cool if they built this in the north pole with it's own power plant and let researchers run stuff like folding or other apps that benefit the world as a whole. Making the worlds largest porn database/delivery system [internet as some call it] seem like a waste of processing power to me.

Wow thats alot of power.. I wonder if you popped a 8800GTS in there if it will max crysis at 1920x1200 lol

Na, it would still bottleneck. Especially in the Ice Cavern.

curious . . .

just how many acres of land will they need to aquire for a center to house this monstrosity?

Wow, though, you could imagine the heat output? They'll be able to save on structural heating costs, for sure!

Just vent it outside, global warming ftw..

Unfortunately, F@H doesn't make a lot of business sense. F@H has had a huge amount of power with all of the combined computers that they have gotten over the past year and nothing substantial has happened in the way of solving these diseases. Instead of just number crunching, we need to come up with a smarter way of curing cancer. In the mean time, this approach will be much more benefitial to the world.
