IBM is working on building a monstrous $200 million petaflop supercomputer. Commissioned by the National Science Foundation, it would be the fastest computer in the world, the first to break the petaflop barrier.
( If we could only add quad 8800Ultras and play crysis in a 100 inch tv !! :p )

To me this seems pointless..but ive no idea what this beast would really do....just some defence stuff for USA...sounds boring to me...since its 200 million to make and may end up costing a total of 400 Million....and a whooping lifetime of 5 years sounds like a bad idea..could you imagine....buying a comp for that price!!! hehe!!

So...what does it actualy do?

So...what does it actualy do?

Massive amounts of calculations obviously.
Example,

Imagine the NSA wants to monitor every communication into and out of the US as well as all the communication occuring WITHIN the US. They get one of these machines to do it.

ALSO, imagine that someone was protecting their transmission with an encryption. Obviously the only way to get in would be to brute force the encryption with guesses until one of them worked. These computers are probably capable of doing that. While on your standard machine it would probably take you several hundred/thousands of years :p

Though I doubt theyr being used for that ;).
Perhaps scientific applications?
Data warehousing/data mining?
