Followed it in realtime, still a shitstorm. What I mostly remember is a few people saying "no it's totally about ethics" while the rest of the male part of the internet cried over how SJWs ruined everything for them and how white males were just as discriminated against as anyone and how Quinn and Sarkeesian (who I don't care for much, my comment upwards was just to get a reaction from someone because holy crap people get upset by her, it's hilarious) could really use some non-consensual penetration and also that they are media whores who faked all the threats, and also some serious discussions about how women are biologically inferior to men. You know, the kind of people who thinks it's truly astonishing how white dudes can't call black people ni***rs anymore, or just don't understand why rape jokes in general are not ok, or think that because the US had a black president they didn't have a problem with racism, or how hating mexicans because they are literally the scum of the earth didn't make them racist because mexican is not a race.
And from there it deterioated, with every side having the moral highground, up to a point that literally everything you read on the subject became essentially partisan. And compared to global politics of today it was just a hint of what was to come.
EDIT: That is not say the "other side" was right either and didn't do retarded things and have weird opinions, But the above is quite literally what I saw when following the thing. Which is interesting, because again, everyone had the moral highground.
