The facts:

Larrabee will differ from other discrete GPUs currently on the market such as the GeForce 200 Series and the Radeon 4000 series in three major ways:

Larrabee will use the x86 instruction set with Larrabee-specific extensions.

Larrabee will feature cache coherency across all its cores.

Larrabee will include very little specialized graphics hardware, instead performing tasks like z-buffering, clipping, and blending in software, using a tile-based rendering approach. A renderer implemented in software can more easily be modified, allowing more differentiation in appearance between games or other 3D applications. Intel's SIGGRAPH 2008 paper mentions order-independent transparency, irregular Z-buffering, and real-time raytracing as rendering features that can be implemented with Larrabee.

Each Larrabee core contains a 512-bit vector processing unit, able to process 16 single precision floating point numbers at a time. This is similar to but four times larger than the SSE units on most x86 processors, with additional features like scatter/gather instructions and a mask register designed to make using the vector unit easier and more efficient. Larrabee derives most of its number-crunching power from these vector units.

Larrabee has a 1024-bit (512-bit each way) ring bus for communication between cores and to memory. This bus can be configured in two modes to support Larrabee products with 16 cores or more, or fewer than 16 cores.

Rumors:

It is said that Larrabee will be 5x faster than the current Geforce 295 GTX.
It is said that Crysis can be played at maximum settings with 80fps.

My opinion:

I think Larrabee will be a God-send video card. Intel will put an end to ATI and NVIDIA-empire video card manufacturers. No more monopoly and dictatorship from ATI and NVIDIA.

I really like Intel to put an end to this madness.

and I would like Intel to stop monopolizing the CPU industry, but I don't see that happening.
imho- Intel doesn't have the goods yet. I suspect not until 2020-2021 before its actually marketable.
Also- The Phenom II is 128bit instruction set capable as is Istanbul. So, AMD is already jumping ahead of Intel again in that market. (Whats wicked, the US DoD is looking for 128bit capable CPUs... and Intel doesn't have squat)

Well, I think that until this is actually ready for release, there will be many more cards that get released which will get closer and closer to this mark.

Intel is not some small vague company. They actually have money, skilled personnel, and everything required to make chips. They're not known for endlessly delaying things and producing vaporware.

I'm not sure what you're getting at with 128 bit CPU's, they won't exist for many years to come and have nothing to do with Larrabee.

As for those "rumors", I highly doubt anyone actually thinks that or has claimed that. It certainly won't happen. Beating competition by a factor 5 is simply stupid from a marketing point of view. Besides, I highly doubt it will kick any ass initially. I just hope it gets near them and the second or third generation becomes a serious competitor.

ATI and Nvidia disgust me with their money grabbing practices.

I wish death to the two empires "Nvidia" and "ATI". They should be stopped. and Intel will stop them eventually from producing anymore expensive video cards.

The Larrabee will be sold at $100 or even lower and will be a fast chip. come on. show me a chip from ATI or Nvidia with the same price and perform fast.

Larrabee for life.

And you think Intel would be any different if they took over the graphics market crown????......you'll be doing alot of this... :banghead::banghead:

Their not getting into the graphics market to come save us from ATI/Nvidia...their coming to grab their piece of the lucrative graphics market pie......your fooling yourself if you think any other way.....and as mentioned before....by the time it does get released....ATI/Nvidia would more than likely have comparable tech out as well.

All I hope for is a competitive product...to force the market lower. :rockout:

I feel forced to upgrade. I am being forced to upgrade by ATI and Nvidia by keep releasing new video cards every month.

and NO. I believe the Intel is doing this to save us. They know that Nvidia and ATI are ripping us off. thats why they want to do that. I am all for the permenant solution of the video card. I dont want to upgrade. I think Larrabee is the way to go. We dont have to worry about upgrading.

Intel should make ATI and Nvidia to go out of business and invent a one-time only solution product and embed it onto the motherboard as a graphics processor powerful enough to run and play new games. thats what i want. I dont care about the evolving technology.

I dont want a technology if its at the expense of the user.

If you really beleive that, i'm a nigerian prince and i can totally set you up for life if you make a one time donation of $10,000 USD to my account.

Intels been making onboard video for years, and you know what? every versions faster than the last one, with more features, and you need to buy a new motherboard to get it.

You're dreaming if you think intels doing this to save you from the constant stress of seeing something new and shiny that you dont own. They're doing it to join in the fun, and make money.

That's the whole point of a company, making money. Intel just wants a piece of the pie, their goal isn't to make sure you are happy. If Larrabee is fast it won't be cheap. Besides, Intel and AMD have the same going in the CPU market as NV and AMD have in the GPU market.

Other than that I'm into Nigerian princes.

who says they didnt think of it years ago, but the manufacturing technology wasnt up to scratch to MAKE it?

You're making assumptions to suit your conclusion that intel wants to spoon feed you happiness and rainbows. its a very flawed logic. You're talking about the same company thats about to get fined 1 billion euros for dirty business tactics.

lets hope that they are doing this for us. lets hope that their fast chip will be at $100 or lower.

They are not doing this for us. They are doing this to make money. Every company is like this.

Intel will price their chip competitively, but they will have to still make a profit from the chip. The more powerful it is, the more work will have had to have gone into the chip's design, the more complex the chip will be and the more expensive to produce the chip will be. The more complex the chip the higher the failure rate will be when producing the chips. So unless Intel sells the chips for a loss they will be priced in the same $/performance range as ATi and Nvidia chips, pricing it any lower would not make any business sense.

And ATi/Nvidia's pricing of late has been brilliant due to the price wars - look at the new Ati 4770 - for $99 you get amazing performance compared to a few months ago.

Saying that i am looking forward to seeing how Larabee fares, though i do believe it will take a couple of generations for it to be refined enough to truly compete.

what did they do to get fined 1 billion euros??????

Back when AMD had released the first Athlon64 processors (which were a LOT more powerful than Intel's best chips - the Pentium 4s) Intel did some illegal deals with PC manufacturers saying "we'll sell you our chips for slightly less but you are not allowed to buy AMD chips at all". They did it to make money, and to cripple AMDs sales as much as possible so Intel could sell their slower chips in decent quantities.

To put it into perspective for you it would be like Larabee being the most powerful GPU available and ATi and Nvidia saying to pc manufacturers "we will only sell you our GPUs if you don't buy Intel Larabees", and because ATi and Nvidia chips are already in tons of pc configurations the manufacturers would have to agree. Obviously that won't happen but it's comparable to what Intel actually did.

Yep^ cos I still can't believe $100 for something that kicks GTX 295's ass

i paid $150 for an 8800GT, and that totally DESTROYED the $600 6800 ultra i once had.

the $100 rumours are utter BS, this card will cost MORE than the video cards ($500+) because its NOT JUST A VIDEO CARD - its meant as a rendering workhorse for 3D/video encoding.

Not to mention Intel's recent track record of igp's...

intels IGP's have always been great, for rendering a windows desktop and office at the same time. any more than that... well, good luck.
