/yawn.

I'm sure all the Fermi cards running will accelerate global warming, melt the polar ice caps and Jen-Hsun Huang will be tried for crimes against the planet, blah, blah, blah.

But will it blend? And him too?

i figured the heatpipes on the nvidia card would be doing a little more

instead the card itself just seems to be baking in its own ovenlike inferno. the pcb is cooking... i wonder how much a fan blowing on the back would help?

Not meaning to be nVidiot here, as I consider Fermi to be a huge letdown, but why isn't there any sign of the VRMs on the ATI pics? GPU-Z keeps telling me mine are over 100°, yet I don't see any temp increase in the pics around the VRM area.

Did they have any case fans in that system? I don't think these are realistic conditions if they didn't.

What did they do to get the 5970 to 91.3 degrees?

After 15 minutes of Furmark burn mine hardly goes over 83 degrees. :confused:

Being that the fermi headpipes are white while the core is red at load, I infer that that means that (these or all) headpipes are shit in terms of heat transfer.... Someone ?

not aimed just at you, this is aimed at everyone who questions these results.

1. your temp sensor is in a different spot. this is the backside of the card where its not cooled well. of course it will give different readings to the sensor inside the GPU with a slab of metal on top of it.

2. umm, different ambient temperatures can make a big difference.

For some reason with the 58xx series the VRM's stay very cool. Cooler than the GPU for both idle and load. It's the opposite of the HD48xx series in my experience. Nvidia cheaped out with the power componentry, but this leads to the fact that the basic PCB/power design can be improved and definitely will be with non-reference designs. :toast:

What ^he^ said. Also, because of the backplate on the 5870, I don't think those pics are completely accurate as to how hot the 5870 pcb gets under load. You are simply seeing how hot the backplate gets. Yes, Fermi is hotter, but it's bigger too, so that's expected.

it will be interesting to see if any AIB partners step up and replace components on the GTX 480 with quality to improve thermals. And if it actually makes a big difference then it'll show how cheap/stupid nvidia went with the PCB design.

I think if you can afford an gtx480 you can also afford some aftermarket cooler or liquid cooling for the moster gpu xd

fast gpu's will be hot

Talking about redesigned PCB for the GTX480, here is some news I found (with included pics of redesigned PCB):

People are predicting short life time of GTX480 because of the temp they run at. The same was said for 8800Ultras. Because the time passed, what is the verdict on 8800Ultra ? Are there are live 8800 Ultras or all are dead as was predicted ?

yeah that's what i was thinking. obviously with the pic of the 5870 you see one hot zone which is the core, while the top temp could be lower I can live with that.

with the gtx480 and the 5970 it's obvious that cooling needs to be majorly addressed. but I guess if you can afford 500-700$ for a card you should be able to get a 80-120$ waterblock.

Point and case right there.
All this whining about heat is just more mainstream users trying to afford and run enthusiast products within mainstream boundaries.

If you can spend $500 bones on a card, you can surely drop a little more cash for a better cooler - IF you are THAT worried.

I don't know why people expect different. So many products roll off factory lines with less than the best components, obviously to cut costs. Whether it's a GPU, or your vacuum cleaner or your car. Hence why 'aftermarket' is a profitable business. Yes, people modify their vacuum cleaners. Tool Time anyone? ;grunt;

@MDSX

Yes, the X2 can get extremely hot, I can tell you first hand. Before I had liquid blocks on it, it would soar. The funny thing is, I never bothered to volt mod it. It's just that I had cooling equipment left over from the G80 series, and decided to make use of it, rather than let it sit there collecting dust. I'm glad I did, because I hate fans. Not necessarily the noise, there's just something very primitive about them. I have a serious laugh when I see some cases decked out with twenty fans or some equally ridiculous amount.

Oh and ya, neat pictures!

What I see is that about 6 months ago, Nvidia saw that their Fermi (at whatever clock speeds they were planning to release it at that time) was not enough to beat the 5870.

So, they ramped it up as far as they could, and then built a massive, overdesigned cooler just to support it. It's a colossal mess.

Any idea that the SM they disabled in the core was because that, had they left it enabled, the temps would've just been too high?

-I think mixing water cooling and electronics is strange, unless you are in a lab maybe... water is for washing...
All to just move your fans from their original location to be mounted on a radiator.... haha

- Don't know if the 480 cooler is massive or not but I just checked universal 3rd party VGA coolers and many take up THREE slots...

Sometimes we are a weird folk... ;)
