Insane cpu temperatures.

Upon turning computer on the CPU temperature is 40 - 45C. When ever I play garrysmod for even just 10 minutes my cpu elevates to 70C. Which is way to high, 3 degrees a minute. After 70 it bogs down performance. I tried the following.
Checking dust and removing with compressed air.
Went into bios and made it so cpu fan is always at full speed.
Clean off current thermal paste, and adding new.
Under clocking. Lowering multiplier and voltages.
Also air circulation should be good.

None of these worked even a bit.

At one point in modern warfare 2 my cpu reached a whopping 85C without stutter. I know this because I set the bios to make a beeping noise when ever cpu reached a temperature. 90C is the point amd says the cpu will likely get killed.

When I first got the thing it rarely made it to 60. Please help. :cry:

test the heatsink whit your finger to check if it is really hot, maybe a sensor error

Sounds to me like a not properly seated heatsink, or too much thermal paste. However I don't think you'd be one to put the whole tube on the die...

So its either the heatsink or another technical malfunction.

The stock cooler is the plain alum version right? (not the good heatpipe version)

AS5 is pretty thick stuff. If you use too much it won't work. I would suggest trying some MX-2 spread in a very thin even layer on the CPU.

i agree. a couple years ago my friends 4000+ started overheating and bogging down, turned out the fan on the stock hsf was about dead.

invest in a new hsf! even a $20 one will work, or less for a stock replacement if you don't oc.

Load up a program called HWMonitor. It logs the highs and lows on all readings your motherboard is outputting (provided the code is written for it). If the core temps says more than 60C then you really need to do the cleaning and reapplying of paste step. Sometimes I have seen basic coolers over a time period looses contact (yes I have one like that lol), so apply paste and put the cooler and clip. Remove it to see if the cooler has paste smeared on it. If so good, then clean and reapply and put the cooler. When applying the paste like others said apply a thin layer or just put 2 drops of AS5 in the center of the CPU and if the cooler base contact is good, the force of installation will spread the paste evenly and that will give good cooling.

I installed a fan in the back of chassis blowing out. I applied a reasonable small dab of paste. I also flicked the lever on my heat sink the opposite direction and it seems tighter(3 way lever). If I experience any problems I will get a nice new fan/hs.
