They are so desperate to tell people to wait for something they don’t even know is coming.

I have absolutely zero pity on Intel’s situations, this is a consequence they have spent over 6 years, essentially since Sandy Bridge, building up.

I mean new HEDT series in Fall 2019 is big news I think, this is like X-series of x299 type processors right? they probably will throw 14nm a bunch of wattage to beat out AMD at the sake of more power usage. I don't know.

but 9900k or 9700k at 5ghz prob still beats AMD in most gaming situations other than 4k. we will find out soon enough with official benches, but the mere fact I am even typing this makes me sad... really was hoping for more than 1% gains on single core performance over 9700k... Lisa Su's powerpoint showed 3900x only beats 9700k at single core by 1%... i mean its nice they can finally match intel at IPC... I just was hoping for more. /shrug

The disclaimer on the performance slides.
That's a given, as I speculated previously their biggest jump would come from patching spectre/meltdown in hardware & then comparing patched skylake systems against (unpatched?) Icelake ones! Though it could be a mini scandal if Intel doesn't disclose the performance loss on SKL after all the patches are applied :ohwell:

Well I guess they intel did their best taking into account their current situation at this time. This was Intel today --> "Hey, people, we have 10nm cpus and we are first doing for notebooks/laptops because it offers us a lot more money than desktop cpus then after we get all the money from that market segmentation then we will focus on peasant desktop users, so wait for us in 2021, we will come to save you from evil amd".

Looking at their software, I must say, I'm impressed, the overclocker software is great, finally something to depend on for a secondary opinion on how far your cpu can get on it and AI apps were great too.

Lisa Su's powerpoint showed 3900x only beats 9700k at single core by 1%.

I think it was 4%. Although I agree is lower than we expected as is 7nm and if intel launches a 10nm which matches amd's 7nm from TSMC, we will see around 7 to 10% which in turn will match core per clock x amd but if that happens, amd will have to increase clocks a bit to match intels 10nm in single thread.

Even in their Ice Lake talk, they never once mentioned desktop. Just that you can expect mobile ICL by yearend. The remainder of 2019 will suck for Intel's desktop CPU sales, unless they put out 10-core "Panic Lake."

utilize -> utility

I wonder what makes Athena 1.0 so special. I mean, laptops have never really had a form factor. If it is an honest form factor with part swap compatibility, Athena 1.0 could be major.

Just posted on TH, looks like they are able to hit 4.1Ghz max compared to 4.8Ghz on i7-8665U and with 1.18X IPC gains they can get to similar performance.

@Vya Domus My guess it will be power efficient and they will really push "better battery life" and the alleged GPU improvements.

@howgeek

It will be interesting to see how many SKUs actually use the faster RAM and what the price bump to get it will be.

Market/bench using the fast stuff and then sell systems with the slower ones would not surprise me at all. The difference in graphics (games in particular) is likely quite a bit (15% just from the clock speed but it could be more or less depending on how much it might be bottlenecked at the slower speed I imagine, does LPR/x also offer lower latencies/other things for more speed than just faster clocks?)

Just like the comparisons to the AMD systems seem to be using single channel 2400MHz for AMD.

True for desktops, though with second gen 10nm (ICL) their efficiency numbers will be higher for mobile chips.

its not a surprise at all, they dont have any real product to match their competitor yesterday,
the closest thing they have on hand are i9 9900KYS CPU for desktop ....and thats it !

I have yet to see this leak but regardless if Intel is leaving it for later, focusing on laptops first then in the meantime fixing whatever has to be fixed on their 10nm. This is no different than what amd has done in 2006. In 2006, AMD failed, question now if Intel will fail or not.

For notebooks this is very good.

Wait till you find out it's all BS and base clocks are terrible.

I think they had very bad luck with the failed 10nm attempt. Still, I don't think we should worry about them getting spanked by AMD. They have such an enormous amount of IP, projects, people, money and aces up their sleeve, that there is no chance AMD will dethrone them for very long. I think with Zen 2, AMD will have another Athlon 64 moment and I hope they will try to execute better with next designs (read, more aggressive performance improvements), cause Intel probably has a Core like uArch ready to go (read Ocean Cove, or whatever the name they gave it). So yeah, I think we should enjoy the competition, enjoy the prices, great products and care less about who is doing what.
I also believe they have handled this whole 10nm fiasco pretty well. They have made in pretty short time, 6/8/10 core monolithic designs on an much improved 14nm process. 5Ghz, 8 cores, 16 threads, I think that is quite a CPU to have in a notebook (mind you, limited by thermals, but nevertheless). If it weren't for AMD, we would still have 4/8 cores CPUs in laptops.

@TheGuruStud

I was thinking the same on the mis-typed name. :)

Maybe this is why they are pushing all that "real world" computing PR blurb, so they can justify the low base clocks. "we have low base clocks as those are fine for "real world" use cases and this gives you amazing battery life" or some such spin.

Not 3900X but 3700X. AMD show 3700X beats 9700k at single core by 1% it totally mean AMD IPC outperform Intel IPC because 3700X boost only upto 4.4 GHz meanwhile 9700K has upto 4.9 GHz turbo. AMD having lower clock speed but match Intel.

Not sure if honest mistake or not, but a 9900KillYourSelf sounds just about right for Intel's current situation :D
