They do, but I'm guessing the boys in the video don't know what a PC is. No, I haven't watched it, I am really not a fan of videos.

The wonders of VT-d/IOMMU. I wanted to do this but with a lesser GPU in my gateway server so I could have a HTPC without adding another box to my living room. It takes time to setup that stuff though and it doesn't always work flawlessly.

Why no time? It's an hour long... ...I know it is not in the first half.

Investors don't like the status quo. Intel is putting on a show to try to stop their shares from falling with the rest of the market by giving investors something that's growing to think about.

Yea, I was trying to figure out a way to do that by buying 2 GTX 750ti's and doing it in my media server which has two old Xeons and seeing if two could play something like League of Legends at the same time.

They are just trying to put more effort into other areas because of the way the PC market is going. Even if they say they are not focusing on it the PC side of things with focus on the server we will still get improvements on the PC parts.

Intel not focusing on PC ? BS. Their main segments are PC's and servers, partially phones and tablets.

AMD on other hand is focused on PC's and consoles, some server and some laptops with their APU's. They sold the mobile divisions so there's that...

I still say they don't know the definition of a PC
You really should to avoid making (and repeating) uninformed, if not foolish statements like that. Linus does indeed, know what a PC is. While the acronym "PC" stands for "personal computer" which, by definition includes all sorts of computing devices, in the IT world, the "PC" is, of course, the ATX form factor compliant computer typically found in an ATX compliant "tower" case that sits in a semi-permanent location on/in desks or on the floor - that is, not mobile and especially not hand-held devices.

Intel not focusing on PC ? BS. Their main segments are PC's and servers, partially phones and tablets.
AMD on other hand is focused on PC's
You are contradicting yourself. A PC is NOT a server, nor is it a phone or tablet. A PC can be used as a sever, but a computer designed from the ground up as a server, is not a PC.

And AMD announced years ago it is no longer competing with Intel, nor putting its primary focus on PCs either. AMD is putting its primary focus on mobile devices.

because of the way the PC market is going.
Exactly. Not focusing does not mean ignoring to getting rid of that portion of their business.

Seriously that term can be used in many different ways. It just closely associated with Window desktop computers.

A personal computer is a general-purpose computer whose size, capabilities and original sale price make it useful for individuals, and is intended to be operated directly by an end-user with no intervening computer time-sharing models that allowed larger, more expensive minicomputer and mainframe systems to be used by many people, usually at the same time. - Wikipedia

More or less, your smartphone is a PC or even a darn tablet. Its your personal computer. Though in this instance Intel probably using it to refer to desktop computers. Which they should just straight up say desktop computer.

Which don't surprise me. Mobile and server side with virtual machines is where money is at.

Right! We can play around with semantics all we want to defend what we said. But we all know the point here is what is traditionally known as the "desktop" PC. And the point of Intel's announcement is they are shifting their primary focus away from the "wintel" PC.

And what have I said? With servers I'm talking racks. Clearly. Xeons and Opterons.
Yes, now you say that. But before you said it was BS and their main segment is PCs and servers. And while it may be true that PC CPUs are a major "segment" of their business, the point of Intel's announcement is that PC CPUs will no longer be one of their primary areas of "focus".

So setting semantics aside and sticking to what those inside and familiar with the IT industry know as the "PC", and with the understanding that a company's business "segment" is totally different from their "area of focus" looking forward, it is not BS at all. The facts are clear. "PC" sales are declining. Hand-held sales are climbing. Demands for "cloud" storage and cloud computing is climbing. And apparently, developing non-volatile RAM that is 1000 times faster than SSDs and 10 times denser than today's DRAM is their 3rd new area ("pillar") of focus too.

Course I know. ;)

Anyway, as for the question, I don't really see the problem. In my mind the only ones with traditional towers are gamers and professionals with workstations. For everyone else there is no point in having such a machine. None whatsoever.

Mostly because they can't be bothered with AMD who's no challeneg to them and they can focus on other things. Which can only mean new desktop CPU's will suck, be expensive, just because they basically have a monopoly over CPU market. Which only means times ahead will suck for PC segment. I really hope AMD Zen will shake up the CPU world.

I like most of them. He talks fast, but in plain language that most non-technical types can understand. For that reason, I recommend his tips frequently.
Course I know.
Then why claim otherwise? ???

In my mind the only ones with traditional towers are gamers and professionals with workstations.
What? Where is your mind then? Because with your last, and not this comment, it does not appear to be in this universe! ;)

Seriously - it does not appear you understand the facts of life. Depending on the source, there were 100 to nearly 300 million "PC" sales in 2015. And while that is down a little from 2014, millions of new PCs are being sold every month and virtually every single one of the PCs (that is, not notebook or tablet) sold is a "traditional tower".

Contrary to what you seem to believe, not everyone is ready to give up their full sized keyboard, mouse and monitor - not yet anyway.

You sneaked in this reply just seconds before my last reply.

I agree in part but as I noted way back, when AMD leapfrogged over Intel 10 years or so ago, that really, I mean REALLY embarrassed Intel. Intel got caught sitting on their thumbs and got spanked hard. And it took nearly 8 years for Intel gain the lead again.

I think it important to remember Advanced Micro Devices (later just AMD) got into the CPU business because IBM insisted on there being a second source for Intel CPUs. So Intel partnered with AMD to make Intel CPUs under license, but AMD started making their own, then whooped -up their teacher! Intel cannot afford letting that happen again - if for no other reason than to save face.

So they are bothered by AMD and do consider them a challenge. Just not a threat to take over again as long as Intel does not rest on it laurels again.

AMD is already focusing on those other things too. And with AMD's continued partnership with (and perhaps buy-out by) Samsung, AMD may be a challenge for Intel in future memory technologies too.

It is simply not possible (or is very difficult) to grow more by doing just PCs. That does not mean it is not really a core business and focus anymore, just that it is time to build foundation for other market segments by investing in them heavily.

Think of different business areas as pillars that support each other.

Linus is a idiot he breaks shit and fails so often its a wonder he even manages to operate twitch .... which he can barely do if you wanna see something amusing go watch the `whole room water cooling debacle` and read the comments pretty much everybody told him it was a stupid idea and wasn't gonna work ... and it blew up in his face and the intel focusing on other things is nothing new they don't need to focus on the pc at all its pretty much `done` intel is so far ahead of the curve and as so much money in the bank that they are free to pursue other things

i think at least for now intel try to move its point, since mobile platform is developing pretty fast. from NUC, usb based, smartphone/tablet
and its normal when they try to find another promising market and not stuck in one market
