It looks like AMD has really scared Intel if this latest leak turns out to be true. In addition to the rumoured 12 core X-series CPU, Intel might just be launching 14, 16 and 18-core options. The question is, how many organs would one have to sell to afford one?

And to all the "Intel planned this for a long time" people, this seems very reactionary to me, as this has not been mentioned in a single leak until now.

Not at all.

No? So why all of a sudden such a massive shift in products? Intel has been snoozing comfortably for years doing the same X-series lineup with 6, 8 and more recently 10 cores. Why four new SKU's out of nowhere if they didn't feel the pressure from AMD?

Wow. Now if only they could be reasonably priced..might be worth selling off a kidney for. I don't drink so I don't need them both. LOL

I dunno, looks kinda fake, also why stop at 18 cores & how's the price gonna be?

They already make 18C/36T Processors in the Xeon range, so the only new aspect is the core speed increase, and availability to the consumer market instead of server market.

Yes but since they've already got Xeons that do all the heavy lifting, in the prosumer space, why would they want to cannibalize their own high margin product. Also with the 18c, shouldn't this have been planned a full two or so years back? AFAIK the Xeon & HEDT dies are separate & what happens to their cash cow i7 now?

They're not cannibalizing anything, the two will remain separate distinct entities, and i9's will be the new cash cow.

i cant quite see the point in the obsession with more cores for the consumer market.. okay its a selling point but history says that its one hell of a long time before software catches up with the core count.. we are only just about making use of the original quad core chip that came out ten years ago.. :)

okay its a big selling point if the price is right which is why amd have taken it.. but in reality it should not fool the more knowledgeable PC user or make them lust after more cores..

Ryzen kicked them pretty hard in the balls. Otherwise you guys would be lucky to see anything beyond 8 cores sometime in 2018... From Intel that is.

That's just your opinion.

If there's a consensus, it's hardly just someone's opinion. A lot of people agree that Intel didn't expect AMD to launch the kind of CPUs they did and they are clearly doing their best to come up with a counter ASAP. Why are you so defensive about this? There's nothing wrong with it, in fact, it's a good thing, as we might see some new innovation in the next couple of years because or more competition.

This is NOT for the consumer market though, this is HEDT which is a niche category. Threadripper will be in the same category.

Also, there are no other sensible ways to increase performance today, as higher speeds is not something we can achieve beyond say somewhere around 5GHz, at least not with current chip making technology, so rather than go fast, we have to go parallel for computational tasks. For most people there is a diminishing return somewhere though and today 4 cores seems mostly adequate, but if you do video editing/encoding at home, more threads helps a lot. For other things, it might not be so useful for consumers and you're right, it takes time for software to catch up, but we've had the same discussion over and over again. It was exactly the same when Intel launched hyperthreading, why would anyone need that? And the same happened with dual core, quad core etc. If no-one moves forward, nothing will ever improve and we'd still be stuck in the dark ages eating gruel with a wooden spoon in the light from a fire at best.

And who's to be blamed for that? Partially AMD for not releasing kick ass CPU and partially Intel for just being lazy living off quad cores...

I i think it fair to say it would have likely been a slightly different lineup if Ryzen wasn't out, in that case why would intel need to release this lineup can you answer that, i don't think they just invented some skus in panic no but i think it fair to argue they could have been amended and tweaked.
Its unimportant in the end , competition is all good.

Intel scared i don't think so, if anything AMD just opened intels eyes to offer more cores, but really who the hell uses this many cores? i would rather a new 8 core chip at 5ghz than more cores.

I would not say they're scared but Amd are definitely moving from a negligible high end x86 market share to taking back market share from intel, they would be stupid to not be concerned and negligent if they didn't react with a reasonable business plan ,i personally consider this to be that , a reasonable attempt to hold mindshare and retain market share.

Behold! We'll have a new Core i9 and new 4C/8T  Core i7 at twice the price. AMD has been in REM-phase for the last 5 years considering CPU's, but they finally awakened this year. Currently AMD offers much better solutions for medium and high-end systems than Intel. Seems to me that Skylake X might be slightly faster, but it will be also 2 or 3 times more expensive, so its value is very questionable. AMD has yet to release their CPU's with more than 8 cores, but I'm sure that they'll be significantly cheaper than Intel.
