Intel Says Its Upcoming Gen12 GPUs Will Feature Biggest Architecture Change In A Decade

Intel is slowly realizing plans to "one up" its GPU game starting from first 10 nm Ice Lake CPUs that feature Gen11 graphics, equipping users of integrated GPUs with much more performance than they previously got. Fortunately, Intel doesn't plan to stop there. Thanks to the recent pull request found on GitLab Mesa repository, we can now expect to receive biggest GPU performance bump in over a decade with the arrival of Gen12 based GPUs, found on next generation Tiger Lake processors.

In this merge request, Francisco Jerez, member of Intel's open source Linux graphics team, stated the following: "Gen12 is planned to include one of the most in-depth reworks of the Intel EU ISA since the original i965. The encoding of almost every instruction field, hardware opcode and register type needs to be updated in this merge request. But probably the most invasive change is the removal of the register scoreboard logic from the hardware, which means that the EU will no longer guarantee data coherency between register reads and writes, and will require the compiler to synchronize dependent instructions anytime there is a potential data hazard..."

Planned for release sometime around 2020/2021 (with Tiger Lake), Gen12 graphics features a complete overhaul of Execution Unit in a way we haven't seen since i965 debut. There will be less hardware logic that checks data for coherency, possibly resulting in lower latency and higher performance. That workload will shift from logic built into hardware, to compilers for them to figure out if data is correct or not, resulting in less wasted GPU clock cycles dedicated to that function.

Software A lot.
Benchmark Scores Its fast. Enough.
From other places it's said to have twice the current performance, which will put it somewhere around 20% slower than a competitive APU from AMD.

AMD better get the lead out on Zen2 with Navi APUs this year if they want to gain market share.

You're misinterpreting. Intel's reps said Gen12 will double upon the speed of Gen11, which already rivals APUs. So That's X4 of Gen 9.5 according to them

AMD Zen2 APUs will have a chiplet just for the iGPU which imho will get in the RX560 level of performance. Which in turn will be much faster than whatever Intel brings to the table in 1-2 years for its APUs. So, too little, too late maybe.

Intel's performance targets for dates so far out do not look very interesting... Small steps I guess.

On the other hand AMD needs to come out with HBM memory for APU chiplets so they can finally be untied from system Ram speed.

RX 560 is over twice as fast as APUs with Vega 11, so you're rather optimistic.

More improtantly: why is this even brought up?
AMD APUs are aimed at entry level gaming. Intel's IGPs aren't.
It won't matter if competing AMD APU is twice as fast. It never had (and the gap used to be wider)

Are you stuck in the past or had your head in the sand last year.

Intel been banging the jungle drums that they are going after gaming in every segment with Xe even in iGPU.

So yes it is highly relevant to bring this up since these 12 gen gpus will be Intel's first Xe push.

Of intel here only appear products that will take out in the year 2020 or 2021. Is advertising paid? They are saying that you don't have to buy now and expect Intel to improve CPU/GPU?

And AMD has said the same thing about conquering workstations. And McDonalds' about healthy breakfasts.
Where the product lacks in actual delivery, marketing team comes to fill the gap. Normal stuff.

Of course with this kind of performance Intel IGP will be able to play Diablo III or Minecraft or other old games. But it was already possible earlier - just at lower resolution.
So what are they aimed at then?
These IGPs will have to deliver 3x4K (high quality, 60Hz) or 2x6K or single 8K.

2020 release doesn't mean January 1st 2020. Intel could take over a year from now and still call it a 2020 release.

ugh who cares about integrated... sigh... makes me so depressed progress is delayed on desktop side for another year or two at least. maybe a 5% gain from nvidia next summer with a turing refresh again since they have no competition. :(
