We will see where this lands, but unfortunately being a university their word doesn't hold very strong against a major corporation...

But being Intel is generally a decently nice company, they will probably hand some cash over, smile, shake a few hands and say "sorry for the overlook" or something to that sort.

wow!, but i'm sure the uni will just get a big fat load of cash each month.

intel can afford to lose the lead in the market to amd and they will spend a load of cash to keep the technology they have been using

CeleronD is Netburst, CeleronL and Celeron e1x00 is Core2. Also the Core Duo and Core Solo are Pentium3's built on a 90nm process with SSE3, its actully older tech than P4 but whoops its royal ass.

the core duo is actually 65nm

Shame they didn't bring this to proper light like um..hmm nearly two years ago? Core tech is on it's way out the door, they may get some reimbursement, but they won't be earning anything :)

And 45nm....

no thats only Core2, Core is totally diffrent from Core

The Core's microarchitecture was a slightly more advanced version of the Intel P6 architecture, that was eventually superseded by the new Core 2 microarchitecture.

Finally a lawsuit with what seems like legit reasoning behind it. I can't wait to see how it'll unfold

I do so hope that the univ. and mr sohi are being smart about this and have an army of lawyers surrounding them, because you can bet the farm that intel is/has put together a crack legal hit squad, think about it for a second.. if this story is legit and it all goes south for intel in the worst possible way.. then this could mean millions(if not billions) to intel in losses not to mention litigation fees and bad public relations.it will be interesting to see what happens over the next few months.

I can tell you what will happen. The Intel lawyers will look at the whole thing and if Intel is even mildly liable they will make an offer. If UW does not like it, Intel will bury them simply by dragging the case out so long that the system will not be able to maintain the incurrred cost of litigation. They will then shake hands and all will be well.

They will settle out of court and nothing will be heard of this again.

no thats only Core2, Core is totally diffrent from Core

acctualy core2 is an EVOLUTION on the core(p6) design started back with the pentium pro, so they arent totaly diffrent, netburst and core/core2 are totaly diffrent in design tho, VERY VERY diffrent goles in mind, netburst was made for CLOCKS at any cost they wanted high clocks compared to amd, core/core2 are back to an older better more efficent design.

to bad amd wont capitilize on this and buy the pattent, that would be FUNNY AS HELL, amd ends up having intel by the gonads.......that would just be funny as hell........

i just hope the school dosnt wimp out and effectivly give away the pattent to intel, im SURE intel knew what they where doing and just hoped to get away with it........time for it to bite them in the ass.

like the stacker situation bit ms in the ass, then ms just bought the company they had ruined to get out of the situation........

Well hell, seems like now adays you have to read a patent bible to make sure you dont infringe on anyone. Ridiculous.

yeah aint intilectual property rights a bitch :/

its why the RIAA/MPAA excist, but in this case i stick behind the "i hope it costs intel thru the ass" because they deserve it.........even my buddy who works for them says that alot of the people in their test labs feel that way, this isnt something intel didnt know about, they knowingly infringed on this copyright, hoping nobody would catchon.

the above said could be very true and more then likely you spelled out exactly how this whole thing will go down.. but honestly i would like to see them stand there ground and bring intel into the light on this one.

Yeah, I agree with the people who say Intel will just shove that guy more money than he knows what to do with and call it a done deal.

What struck me as interesting was that this guy designed Core 2 in 1998, and here we are in 2008 using it, and it kicks major ass.

Most big companies never pay more than a small sum of awarded lawsuits. Intel won't pay much, unless they settle out of court.

Reminds me of my favourite bit from one of my favourite movies, Fight Club:

JACK:
"I'm a recall coordinator. My job is to apply the formula. It's a story problem. A new car built by my company leaves somewhere traveling at 60 miles per hour. The rear differential locks up.

The car crashes and burns with everyone trapped inside. Now: do we initiate a recall?

Take the number of vehicles in the field, (A), and multiply it by the probable rate of failure, (B), then multiply the result by the average out-of-court settlement, (C). A times B times C equals X...

If X is less than the cost of a recall, we don't do one."
