Intel has today confirmed that they have taped in their upcoming 7 nm Meteor Lake compute tile meaning the design is now ready and Intel can proceed to tape out the whole chip. Intel Meteor Lake is rumored to power the 14th Gen Core series of processors which will launch in 2023 and will feature a 7 nm Enhanced SuperFin node. The Meteor Lake series of processors will be Intel's fourth product series to feature a hybrid core design and will support 600 series chipsets expected to launch later this year for 12th generation Alder Lake processors.

Gregory M. Bryant said:
Great way to start the week! We are taping in our 7 nm Meteor Lake compute tile right now.

A well-deserved celebration by the team on this milestone.

Sky Lake, Kaby Lake (review bombed by edgy kids), Coffee Lake, Comet Lake, Rocket Lake, Cannon Lake, Apollo Lake, Ice Lake, Gemini Lake, Tiger Lake all come back to locations, some more obscure than others. Hell, even Haswell, Braswell and Broadwell are real places.

But for Intel's own sake, it might be time to ditch the Lakes naming if Gelsinger is intent on revamping Intel's image. Too much memeing going on nowadays.

So the 600 series chipset will be compatible with 3 gens of cpus? We haven't seen any Intel motherboards that can support more than 2 gens of cpus since eh 2009?

Last time intel had more than one design of chip on a Socket (let alone motherboard) was the socket 775 which had 2 generations of P4 and 2 generations of Core Number Numeral

Why hype something that is 2 years away, when you have a product coming later this year?
Atleast to me this seems like, they are not particularly confident of Alder Lake.

Sooo does this mean the hybrid design actually works? or are they just already going forth on that assumption because if they wait it will be too late?

Because they're desperate to advertise the 14nm+++++++ is a thing of the past, and not where the future tech will go

Intel use better names for server/HPC. For poor peasants consumers like me using "lakes" to drown us in the water. :D

Wall Street needs confidence that Intel can continue to advance its technology. Remember the stock sell off when intel announced last year that its 7nm node was delayed?

Intel was under pressure to show it can continue to execute. Then Apple left intel for its own designs. If a high profile customer like Apple leaves, then others might get spooked and leave as well. And then Apple released M1, which is insanely efficient at what it does and embarrassed intel. And on top of that, AMD is cooking Intel with Zen3 in server, mainstream desktop, and for the first time in a long time, laptop.

These factors combine to paint intel in a very bad light, as it is a poor choice of a cpu manufacturer, possibly inspiring other intel customers to abandon ship. And If that’s the case, then the stock price will plummet, and investors will lose confidence. Death spiral.

Therefore, Intel had no choice but to restore confidence in its ability to supply the PC ecosystem with superior products. And the way to restore confidence is to deliver solutions. Therefore, they had to hype Alder Lake at CES2021, as well as show that Meteor Lake is on track. They had to deliver tiger lake H. They had to pound their noses to the grind stone and find ways to deliver solutions. It’s all about restoring confidence. Gelsinger understands human emotion.

And in the end, we are witnessing why competition is good to consumers. Gone are the days of incremental updates from intel or quad core after quad core. AMD brought innovation to the x86 ecosystem, Apple left and innovated with M1, and if intel wants to stem the erosion of its market share, then it has to adapt, or eventually die.

So many lakes.
They should move their headquarters to Minnesota. They could help add more lakes to the "Land of 10,000 lakes".
