So you're saying that a $740 cpu beats a $460 one?
7800x is $390 and beats the overpriced 1800x most of the time.

8800k will be $350, replacing the current 7700k.

Only thing AMD can do is lower price and play to their budget brand image. They don't have the performance crown in any segment with Ryzen and Vega. R7 1700 @ $199 doesn't sound too bad.

If you need a quad core and a SSD to do helpdesk tasks, you are doing it wrong. You can create and manage work orders on a freaking iphone. You dont need an i7 to load up a single program and fill out text boxes (or do remote work.

Therein lies the problem with your argument. At my job (300+ users) the vast majority of my users are multitasking and thus are concurrently running multiple programs. I am sure this is the case with many other businesses.

I have lost count of how many workstations that I have upgraded that were dual core without HT. The whole "my computer is sooo slow" whine never stops until we upgrade their machine.

Also, 8GB of memory is the new 4GB. SSDs (even if they are cheapies) are crucial as well.

Also new for Coffee Lake:

-Toothpaste 2.0 thermal compound so CPU's are guaranteed not to overclock without overheating
-8 PCIE lanes total, down from 16
-Premium price
-Higher power draw

And of course absolutely no extras like support for ECC memory and other artificial and arbitrary limitations so you cant HEDT or server with your coffee lake without spending even more on Xeon

</sarcasm>

Intel, you need a new management team.

Didn't Intel say there weren't enough pins or some bullshit for not launching 6 cores on 115X? Granted I just skimmed the article- but cmon, really?

I work in an office building and those people are constantly bitching about the speed of their system. Also all of the IT guys have monster quad-cores with SSDs to do helpdesk :/
It has been my observation that the people at work who bitch about performance are the ones who have 8GB of RAM in their laptops. I don't tend to hear complaints from those with 16GB.

Truth, though I could tell a night and day difference from 2c/2t to 2c/4t and the same amount of ram (i wasn't maxing out). I wasn't doing much really.. a 3270 emulator to access the MF, several tabs of Chrome, and a couple pieces of monitoring software (APC Struxureware, etc).

1. Nothing more than RUMORS at this point in time.
2. It's still months away. Most likely next year, unless someone completely loses his shit and they go full on panic mode.
3. In case it's anything like the 2066 platform, only God knows what we will get. Especially since it will most likely get neutered, as to not influence Xeon and HEDT sales.
4. By then we should be seeing Ryzen getting its update/refresh.
5. Read my signature.
6. Fanboys will be fanboys. :fear:

Besides that, dual-core CPUs have long since lost its value, and should be finally put to rest.
Even in the office environment it’s just not enough anymore. Well, unless we are talking about single program use systems, think cash register or similarly simple. I’ve seen/and upgraded plenty of 2c/2t system hoovering at 90%+ use, or even maxing out, and even a simple upgrade to 2c/4t would usually resolve all the complaints.

Welp... Ryzen had a good run. But Intel 6 cores is more consistent in productivity. Factor in gaming and that assessment multiples itself.

An i5 Coffee Lake of 7700k will be the mainstream champion that's for sure.

I'm guessing you ate paint chips as a child!

7800x is $390 and beats the overpriced 1800x most of the time.

On avarage I would call them equals TBH (meaning the 1800x has the advantage in multithreaded applications, essentially), and the star in that comparision is obviously the R7 1700 at $299 @ Newegg. Or even the 1700x @ 339$.

If you need a quad core and a SSD to do helpdesk tasks, you are doing it wrong. You can create and manage work orders on a freaking iphone. You dont need an i7 to load up a single program and fill out text boxes (or do remote work. I can RDP on my dual core i3 system without issue.)

We make do with old core 2 duo systems at work (except us techs, we get i3s). The users load up tons of office instances as well as chrome. the CPU is never the bottleneck, the 4GB of RAM is. A modern i3 system runs rings around our core 2s. I somehow do not believe that your typical office worker would need that much power for an excel spreadsheet.

I played games like saints row the third and supreme commander on a dual core ivy bridge pentium years ago, and those are far more demanding then your typical excell spreadsheet. I highly doubt that a modern core i3 would be faltering under the stress of office 2016 in any capacity.

When did this turn into a contest of who has the crappiest systems to work on?

I wonder if Coffee Lake will be a ring bus or Mesh.

Reason being is is that a 6 core is going to have pretty well much all the same performance as a 7800X, which is slower than a 7700k because of the larger ring bus (and slightly due to IPC improvements).

A mesh is slightly slower than a ring bus, but would take less hops.

Personally, a six core desktop cpu is a bit passe, 6 core in a laptop though is a different story.

Just today I discovered my notebook's i3 can be configured to run at 10W TDP instead of the default 15. Gloriously slow Windows 10 desktop at 600MHz, enough to browse the internet, watch some videos and listen to music.

8700K you mean? Also $350 might be optimistic considering this will be 6c/12t CPU. You think Intel will give you two extra cores for free at the same price as 7700K? Think again.

Or you know launch Threadripper or Zen 2.

Wrong.
Agreed. Vega as opposed to Ryzen is late to the market barely beating 15 month old GTX 1080 @ double the power draw (liquid cooled peaks at 440W. GTX 1080 aftermarket variants are at ~250W and FE is 180W).
R7 1700 @ $199 doesn't sound too bad.
Indeed but first Intel must launch competitive products to force this price drop.
Didn't Intel say there weren't enough pins or some bullshit for not launching 6 cores on 115X? Granted I just skimmed the article- but cmon, really?
Coffee Lake will require a new socket (because Intel) on Z370 or they may go to Z470 to differenciate from AMD's X370. Im guessing the new socket will have more pins but it also means buying a new motherboard again so a very bad value for existing Skylake and Kaby Lake owners.
Why so triggered just because AMD is still the budget brand?
Hardly. You are the one making borderline immflamatory posts here.

Personally I'm not even excited about Intel releases anymore. Even this one, which is the first "big" one in years because we're finally getting more than 4 cores on mainstream, kinda pales when you look at Ryzen 7 series which all have 8 cores + HT, and are already out. Yeah, AMD's platform isn't particularly mature but considering the price you pay for the performance you get with Ryzen, any niggles can mostly be forgiven, and they're pushing updates through regularly as the TPU BIOS Digest posts illustrate.

Now, if Intel would bring PCIe 4.0 and native Thunderbolt/USB 3.1 Gen 2 to the Coffee Lake chipset, that would make the platform a far more compelling upgrade than 2 extra cores.
