Intel is planning to cut prices of its eighth- and ninth-generation desktop processors by 10-15% and has already notified its downstream PC and motherboard partners, according to sources from motherboard players.

Uhm... yay?

I believe the perf loss from HT was a bit more than that. Maybe you should echo that, after all its a feature that you no longer recommend, Mr Blue?

9900 non K at ryzen 3700x price would be sweet.Especially with plenty of very decent z390 boards available at good prices.Grab the cheapest 3600 c16 kit and you're set.

They are obliged to do so if they want to keep a reasonable part of the PC market. Competition offers lower prices.

They can cut prices as much as they want there is nothing they can do about AMD's 12 and 16 core parts, namely their most expensive high end CPUs. It's funny, people anticipated this for so long now it wont even matter.

Market share has been flat for 3 consecutive quarters (22.9% / 23.10% / 23.0%) so obviously, there is nothing at all market wise for Intel to respond to. AMD's market share today is the same as it was in Q2 2015. The 2990WX only outperforms the 9900k by 7% in Premiere while costing 3.4 times more. AMDs best showing here is the 2950X which is 7.5% faster than the 9900k but costing 67.5% more.

AMD's issue here is many folks bought into the "more cores means something to everybody" mindset in rounds 1 and 2 with Ryzen .... and while this is true in workstation applications, it hasn't met that promise in ***mainstream*** usage. I do not see interest or value here outside the "it may not be as fast but it's cheaper" market segment.

Let's remember ....

.... there are 40 9600k's sold for every 9980XE
.... the 9900k is selling in about the same quantity as the 9600k
.... there are 12.5 9900ks sold for every 2950X / 2920X

I'm hoping R3 makes an impact in round 3 and does increase AMDs presence across all niche's .... but attributing Intel's price cuts to anything other than '"clearing the shelves before the next generation's release" is without factual support.

AMD's 7nm is a jump from 32 to 66 Transistors Per Square Millimeter and zen3 on 7nm+ will be 96. intel's 10nm is a jump from 43 to 100 transistors per square millimeter. so if intel releases icelake in october/november as planned core counts aside they will be crushing AMD for almost all of 2020. that said I have no intention of buying a new motherboard anytime soon so if I can find a i5-9500 for about $175 I'm all for it. though if AMD had a 6 core APU I would have considered going ryzen from the start. motherboards that have 2 pci-e 16x slots are never cheap and I like using linux GPU pass-though.
