Phase 1 of the 9600KF 5.0GHz project has been successfully completed. I called 5.0GHz feasible (and stable) from day one with the very underperforming MSI Core Frozr XL, and that's exactly what I achieved, as confirmed via multiple hour long torture tests. And just for the record, the MSI cooler held 5GHz with ZERO problems. It was also tested with BF4 extensively, with graphics set to ultra, and the combined heat was handled by two 120mm Noctua Chromax PWM fans and one 120mm fan in the 5.25" drive bays. And before you jump the gun and say I switched CPU coolers due to thermals, keep in mind that is absolutely NOT the case for this upgrade. This is simply a metamorphosis of the original build to something better and more refined.
We are now making extensive modifications for this new phase of the build.
-Antec 900 watt gaming PSU:
-120mm Liquid cooling system (Pre-installed with new case)
-DEEPCOOL Gamer Storm ATX white tower case with provisions for additional radiator if needed
-MSI RX 5700 XT Gaming X 8GB? Most likely... runs much cooler than the RX 580.
Memory Upgrade: Moving from the G.Skill 4000MHz kit to the Patriot Viper Steel 16GB (2 x 8GB) 4133 MHz
The "Tomahawk" build will go in the Coolermaster case with the MSI Core Frozr XL, so everything will be swapped over.
Here are a few pics to get started. Needless to say, I am impressed with the case already. I'll have an update for you later in the day. For now, just planning and figuring out where everything is going to go, and checking for fitment. Still waiting on the PSU, hopefully it will be here this afternoon and we can get started at that point.
This case came pre-installed with a 120mm liquid cooler, which looks really cool by the way. So far the build quality on this case is impressive. The water cooling system also features a flow meter and high quality connections. The case has provisions for putting the PSU below the motherboard or towards the front if you have clearance issues. So I have to test fit with my board because everything is going to be tight. That's one reason I bought the case, because it's small - I like the more compact form factor. I am sick and tired of seeing these larger than life gaming rigs dominating the consumer marketplace. Seems you might actually need a forklift to move some of them.
In any event, here are some pics of the case for now. I will be updating periodically throughout the day as progress is made.
Goals for Phase II
-Going to give it my best effort to see if we can run stable at 5.3 or 5.4 GHz.
-Minor bump in RAM speed from 4000MHz CL18 to a 4133Mhz CL 17 16GB kit
