Thankyou for taking the time to size them together like that largon, very helpful =) I wasn't mentioning the 4870 though, I meant the array of 4850's available from Palit, Xpertvision and Gainward, and I was referencing them in terms of the 4850's that were first available to us and what eidairaman1 said about manufacturers only selling reference designs at first and then their own designs later.

This 4850 from Xpertvision/Palit that is shorter than a reference 4850 must be their own design. After looking over the sites of Palit, Xpertvision and Gainward, I have concluded that only Palit and Gainward manufactured reference cards for the launch of the 4850. Over here ( http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1060329&p=-1#bottom ) Romanov says:

"Xpertvision = Palit = Gainward"

Assuming that's correct, Xpertvision would have no need to make reference 4850's for launch sale. And assuming Palit is the parent company of Xpertvision and Gainward (Palit displays cards on their website that are also on Xpertvision's and Gainward's) - and to be getting back to your question I quoted: "So how does PALiT "cash in" if cutting PCBs increases cost?" - Palit could be cashing in by having themselves and Gainward cut reference PCBs for the launch whilst having Xpertvision cut their own designs and take the time to perfect them.

Of course, I'm assuming a lot, which I do - a lot. I'm very interested to know the true connection between Palit, Xpertvision and Gainward: who are parent companies, who are sub-companies, maybe they're all subsidiaries of another company? I've no idea; but I like hypothesising, so I just ran with it =)

Over at the other forum ( http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1060329&p=-1#bottom ) Weltschmerz gave some information about this card, of which he has two in crossfire:
Hi Henrah,

That's the same card I have. In as far as stock performance, it seems to perform pretty well (although I don't have any other cards to compare them to). I've OC'd it to the maximum that Catalyst allows me to and that's at 675/1050 (core/memory) with seemingly no problems with most games and applications and causing crashes in others (probably a driver issue). I'm presently at 665/1000 (on XP, stable for everything) and 640/1000 (on Vista64, since it crashes ETQW beyond those settings.)

Before I report on temps, I have to first qualify that I've got a 120mm Fan blowing perpendicularly to both cards with a mesh and foam filter directly behind it (the side panel). On an ambient temp of 23C deg, I'm getting 40C idle (click here for an image - I assume the reduced clock speeds are a result of PowerPlay? -Henrah) and about 55C when on load. I once turned off half the fans in my case (including the side fan) and temps soared (ambient 30C, cards were at about 52C idle and about 69C load after playing a game for 5 mins. Speedfan reported system temps at about 54C!)

I've had these cards for a month now and couldn't be any happier with them. When I ordered them in, I didn't expect them to have non-ref coolers so I purchased some slot blowers to exhaust heat directly from the edge of the card outside. I hope this helps you in your decision to purchase.

As I see it Palit cut off some of the power supply components. The reason people make the cards so big is because they need space for the components.

Yes, it seems they reworked the REGs. Notice how there's no need for the VREG HS part.

Palit one looks like a good improvement due to the regs being set apart from each other and able to put sinks on them if you wanted. MUCH better card IMO.

Only thing i did not like about it was the reviews about the fan.

Maybe it's some thing to do with cost.

actually, Palit was once known for selling cheap underclocked cards,
they were significantly cheaper, but then you would find that the sli connector is missing on the PCB itself, or they were using TSOP memory on cards which nvidia or ati specificly say BGA only, basicly cut any corner possible, i had a ATI 7500 from them which was actually a 7500LE with SDR insted of DDR,

i would only buy a palit card it i had a full moneyback warranty,

But they have turned that around after the 8800GT and a full step into the US. Where it was in China where they were focusing before.

Just look at newegg comments
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010380048 50012156&bop=And&Order=PRICED

Palit is there, and has even posted cell phone numbers in the comments to help people.

Just start looking. At every card you look at and if someone has said something palit has answered directly.

They look at this all over the web I swear. I get emails about this stuff.

There RMA return rate is crazy tho even.

PALiT has a 2 year warranty no ends or buts. There are no tricks, and no go here and sign this in 30 days or else only 1 year warranty. If during those 2 years, and you card dies then they don't have the same one. You get upgraded to the next better thing, or same rated class in the next group of cards(AKA 88xx to 9xx to 2xx.)

Why should they go over two years?

volt mod

Heya, i found a vgpu point. the beige residtor on the far right directly in line with the bs-9m in the photo

i've got my chip getting 1.4 at load and 1.35 idle. This card has some very noticable squeeling at load but i'm stable at 800 \ 1115. havnt tried higher.

I was unsucseful doing the mem volt mod as with the pencil i was using (8b) i couldn't get the resistance to lower much at all ( any ideas?). so i only managed to raise vmem from 1.99 to 2.03.

oh, also. The vmem measuring point i used was, if you see the diamond of resistor names directly to the left of the warranty sticker, the beige mid sized resister immediatly above that thats forming an r with a smaller resistor.

happy overclocking.

Gainward is their own branch. From what I understand what gets you rejection from PALiT main cause is volt mod.

I don't see them refusing you for a lot of things on their list over at gainward.

Got the same card yesterday... Runs quite ok on stock, nice and cool...

closed case (24-25oC amb)
Idle 36oC...
5min furmark, 54oC (fan speed @ 6% - six not sixty :D).

kinda the same temps as my Powercolor 3870 with all copper zerotherm heatsink, and this 4850 has all aluminum heatsink!!! My 3870 had like 5x more fins, and had 2 heatpipes...

I personally like the short PCB, and it might be good for ppl wanting to build a gaming HTPC maybe?

pic of my ex :D (3870 PCS)

I seriously am shocked at how you people are so obsessed with the giant monsters, smaller is better!

I'm sure Godzilla(giant monster=AWESOME) would pwn that little girl from The Ring(smaller=poo).

I agree smaller is better, but at the cost of quality? No can has!

Just to make things clear: You are talking about the resistor I've put a blue square around? That is the place for pencil mod?
