Is 32GB memory really worth it?

I haven't even heard of a game breaking 8GB. I'm going to get a laptop soon, probably on Cyber Monday with 16GB of RAM and I see systems with 32 or 24GB of RAM. And unless you're gonna have multiple hardcore games and photo editing and video editing on your PC, is 32GB memory that worth it?

I assume for a gamer it's worthless, am I correct?
