Hey everyone, bascialy i have a choice of 2 monitors, a 19" which i currently use, and a 22" widescreen which my father uses, and doesn't mind if i switch. However i've been put off using the monitor because of the fact that i'm a competitive online gamer, and i like to have the max amount of FPS.

I just have a few questions, which if anyone could answer, would be fantastic!

1. Will i be at a disadvantage in online FPS's because i have't to move my mouse more because of the bigger screen?

2. I know there's a FPS impact on the bigger resolution, is it noticeable?

3. Does a higher resolution actuley improve the graphics (look) of the game, or is it just simply bigger?

Thanks all, i'm sorry if these questions have been asked many times before, and i hope someone doesn't mind taking 5 minutes to hopefully put me straight! :toast:

1. No. In fact you get get to see more of the battleground with a widescreen giving you an advantage.

2. Its only noticeable if you have a crappy card. I have a 22 inch widescreen and i love it. I want a bigger one in fact. My old 8800GT (which you seem to have as well) ran games beautifully maxed out on my wide screen. And it seems you play WoW the most so you will be fine.

Edit: I played source games on it, CoD4, GoW, UT2004, UT3 demo, Crysis (next to maxed played on high with no AA with almost 30 FPS), Assassins Creed, GRAW, R6Vegas, and a few others. All ran great on my 8800GT and 22 inch.

Hehe thanks, well i haven't actuley played WoW in around 2 years, i'm mainly just playing FPS now, I also heard that somtimes the processor or graphics card can bottleneck your FPS on lower resolutions meaning when you actuley increase the resolution you won't lose too much FPS, is this true?

Edit: How's the 9800GTX compared to 8800gt? worth the upgrade? :)

Bigger is better (Please keep your mind out of the gutter).
I will never go back to a smaller monitor than the one I have. It's fantastic.

completely true, There isnt as big of a resolution hit on FPS as there used to be, but then again I play all my games at 1920x1200.

You'd be better off with a 4850. An 8800GT was about 10% faster than a 3870 at best and a 4850 is about twice as fast as a 3870, a 4850 should be around 80-90% faster than an 8800GT on average and would be fine for 1680x1050 :)

i would prefer a 22 but there is lots to think about, if the 19 was a better monitor ie 2ms and the other is 9ms and say the 19 has a gloss finish then id go for that as i would prefer to play games on a high quality and also in my case i can never max out res on my screen:)

The 22" is 2ms and mine is 8ms, not sure how much difference that makes, if at all :)

You'd be fine going with a 22" monitor. I have a 22" monitor and I honestly can't imagine what it'd be like having a smaller screen. I'd like a bigger one actually lol.

resolution is what matters here, not the size of the screen. my 40" would have a lower res than your 19", giving me a bigger view area and a higher FPS :D

bigger screens certainly do help. you can see everything larger and clearer, which is an advantage no matter how you look at it.

Higher resolution does give you advantage especially for sniper. For the most part things just look for detailed.

but if you had the same computer hooked up to a 40 incher and a 19 incher the 19 inch would be more clear right?

no. the 19" has far more pixels, but each one is also far smaller - while theres more detail there, you need microscopic vision to see it (or move your head so close, you lose the surrounding details)

If by clear, you mean more crisp and defined looking, then yes, absolutely.

But you also have to take into account how far away you plan to be from the monitor. If you are gonna be 10ft away, the 40" monitor would look every bit as good as a 19" from 1ft away (assuming the same resolution, for the sake of argument).

From what I know is that there aren`t large monitor. There are right size and small size. Look at the monitors like women look at the size of the "thing" :D

i'd agree with that. at 2 feet, my screen kinda overwhelms you. i sit at 3 feet, which feels about the same as 1 foot away from my 22", all hunched over like every gamer does.

I went up from 17 to 20.1 widescreen viewsonic now on a 24 inch and will be goin up to 30 when funds allow and have never looked back. Widescreen gaming is amazing! anyway its your dads right? Therefore no harm in trying it out other then the fact your father wont get it back ;-)

I have dual 22 FLATRONs but I don't use dual when gaming. Love it for doing graphic work and video editing.

Sometimes the image quality can be better on a smaller screen. Most 20" widescreens have the same resolution as a 22" widescreen (1680x1050). Much tighter pixel pitch = sharper image and richer colors. That said, I recently purchased an HP w2207h 22 inch over the HP w2007 20 inch (tried them both - like the greater screen "real estate").

i'd agree with that. at 2 feet, my screen kinda overwhelms you. i sit at 3 feet, which feels about the same as 1 foot away from my 22", all hunched over like every gamer does.

Guys do you really play 1 feet away from 19-22" montors and 3 feet away from 40" ones???? :ohwell:

Wow. I don't know exactly how much a feet is in metrics, but I do have an idea. 40-50 cm is the closer I would place my eyes from ANY screen and definately 1.5 m for large screens. You guys are gonna hurt your eyes... Yes LCDs hurt the eyes too, in a different manner than CRTs, but with the luminance of most (5x that of a CRT) they do hurt the eyes a lot. I wouldn't play that close, really.

P.D. If that behavior is common I now understand how I've been almost called cheater in CSS because I am able to see enemies in the border of my screen and aim them quikly. As if that'd be impossible, according to them I had outstanding peripheral view. lol. Certainly from 1 feet (I think it's close to 30 cm?) away of the screen I can't SEE anything on the borders. Almost I can't even intuit something is moving... And even then we react far slower to changes in the peripheral view so it does make sense now.
