Short answer, no, probably not.

It will likely be similar to Hawaii (290x) overall in some regards (performance probably the most important to most consumers), and similar to Tonga/Tahiti in compute per clock (but perhaps clocked so 870 is close to Tahiti and 880 similar to 290 vanilla); what you would expect from the performance (gk104/Tahiti) segment of the generation following Hawaii/GK110 on 20nm, only...without the benefits of 20nm because it wasn't ready (and hence 28nm).

Think GTX580 -> 670-680/760-770, only without the drop from 40nm to 28nm. 680 was around 20% faster than 580. 20nm should bring somewhere around 20-25% (or so) performance over 28nm, which all said and done (around 5% or so) is the speed difference between 290x and 780ti. Hence, it likely will perform (very slightly) worse but constructed with a more efficient (die size) ideal that it's predecessor. It would appear this means a very efficient gaming chip for 32 rops and high clocks. On 20nm this may have meant an efficient 48 rop chip (equal to something like Hawaii or greater per clock) at a relatively similar low clock...or iow instead of getting something similar to a shrunk GK110 but using the benefits/setup of maxwell (and low clocks but high transistor count of 20nm), we get a reworked design more similar to gk104, but with the benefits of Maxwell (and high clocks) with obviously higher power consumption and a higher segment than perhaps originally intended.

TLDR: 880 will probably be like 680/770 in design philosophy, but likely use the power of a high-end part (225w+) rather than lower (conceivably intended as a 680 part deux against Hawaii) perhaps as a direct result of 20nm being late.

Hope that makes sense.

^^^^this. I still doubt it will be our 4k card. I'm tempted to wait and see but the 290xs are here now and can do it

780 TI too also

Well it looks like the jury is still out. I understand we are speculating. Its just I would not be too happy if I was someone who purchased a Kingpin or ti classy because I wanted arguably the best card and then a month or two later a faster card comes out.

Can you imagine the day when a kingpin, ti-classy, or 290x card is relegated to the backup machine. holy smokes

Its just I would not be too happy if I was someone who purchased a Kingpin because I wanted the fastest best of the best and then a month or two later a faster card comes out.

The fastest best of the best cards are the Galaxy HOF cards with Volterra VRM's, and not the Kingpins. They generally tend to OC and perform the best. And you can see that if you check out all tests of all 680's. I'd put the Lightnings on top of eVGA desings as well as they're mostly more efficient. The so called "Kingpin" cards are just more suited for extreme overclocking, which is what the so called "Kingpin" does ...

Ok. best of the best under 1k on amazon or newegg.

I have owned a 290X and a 780ti classy just in this month so I have no brand loyalty. I just am addicted to the latest and greatest. If my rig isn't in the process of being built, rebuilt, or upgraded then I am bored as hell.

They've been out of stock for a while, and have always been delivered in limited quantities, but that was my point. And no, they weren't the ones catching on fire AFAIK.

If you google Hof 780 editon fire problem or something similar there does seem to be a problem.

Yes, my bad. There seems to be a catching on fire issue due to bad VRM on those cards, which is likely why they're recalled. Though, the rest of the HOF cards are pretty much the best in their class and there has been the 780 Ti HOF with a different design that wasn't released in the States or Europe.

Lol, was waiting for that post to appear.

As far as 880 besting a 780ti, not sure. It has to beat the 780 (non ti) otherwise the naming scheme is our of whack. It might replace the 780 price point. Hell, we'll see soon enough. But you'd be foolish to buy a 780ti right now knowing what Nv do with their product stack.

My guess is the GTX 880 28nm Maxwell will be somewhere around the GTX 780Ti and possibly beat it. I don't know about the Kingpin edition though. Those cards are made to OC like crazy. I'm also thinking that if they are going to release the 880 next month then they will probably send one to W1zzard to bench within a few weeks and when the NDA is lifted we will know then how it performs. It's not too much longer now.

I am still confused by the people saying the gtx 880 is going to be worse than the gtx 780ti. Using the 750ti as an example compared to the 650ti the 750ti has roughly 16% (rounded) less cuda core and out performs it by quite a margin (all the while sipping power). So even if we include a 5-10% margin or error I could safely say as long as there's not a significant clock drop or cuda count drop it's going to match it at a minimum.

Of course I could be wrong but it would seem wierd for the next top dog card to be worse than the previous.

IMO opinion the 880 will outperfirm the 780, but not the 780Ti. The reason is one its only 28nm and two, is only the GM204, which is the mid-level maxwell chip.

You will likely have to wait until the 980 for the top-level GM110 Maxwell chip. Think of the same situation as the 680 and 780. 680 was GK104, and 780 was GK110.

I upgrade every 2 cycles, so rather than upgrade on mid-level chip cycles, i upgrade on the 110's. Bottom line, 880 will be an improvement on 780, but I think the 780Ti will still be more powerful. We shall see for sure when W1zzard benches it!! Until then, speculate all you want, but it won't make a difference!

Software A lot.

Do the math, the extra power between the 650Ti/750Ti is mainly from the core clock and a few minor IPC improvements, the 650Ti Boost with more ROPS outperforms the 750Ti however, despite a lower clock speed.

Pascal > Maxwell. I haven't seen anything about Max that suggests it's worth the upgrade to.
