Found a deal which is in my budget but the problem is am totally unaware about deliding a chip.
Although the seller convinced me that deliding helps to pump out more performance.
Should i go for it?
Even the seller told me that he does have the lid and he can put it back(with the adhesive or something of that sort idk!).

Am gonna pair that chip with an MSI Z390 mobo.
I dont intend to overclock and its basically gonna b a home pc so just casual Gaming on weekends is all i desire(CS GO mostly)

Kimdly suggest.
Thanks all

Fits casual pretty well. As for delidding, they make tools that appear to make it stupid easy to do. It should drop your temps but I am not sure how the 9 series compares to previous generations that really benefited from it.

Delidding an i5-9400F will not give any more performance. All it does is lower the temperature, which helps if you're overclocking but you can't overclock an i5-9400F.

I'd only buy it if it was super super cheap, because delidding basically kills the resale value. I'd only pay about $100 for one.

As long as the seller guarantees it from being DoA, I'd say go for it at that price. Delidding isn't going to help that CPU any, but it means you are getting a pretty good deal.

Ask him to put the lid back on. You risk damaging the CPU die if you try to run it without the lid(IHS).

Yup I crushed an AXP3200 die by bending the tension clip harder to increase contact pressure...

Thanks alot everyone for your suggestions.

Have him put the lid back on correctly with a high quality thermalpad or thetmalpaste

i prefer the seller send you the lid and the processor without glueing it since you don't know how he put that back together
except the seller could guarantee that he will use good material to put it back then
if no, better you glue it by yourself

Delidding would affect the warranty, if you insist on buying that CPU, just make sure to test it right after receiving in case of any die damage caused by the seller

Most likely he tried his delidding skills on a cheap CPU before doing the same on the CPU he intends to use. Because Delidding an intel F CPU doesn't make much sense, regardless of the motherboard you use ;)

deliding helps to pump out more performance

This hobby is already so simplified to the point of utter boredom, yet the things people can believe makes me lol.

Yes,i will definitely.
Make sure you do a rigorous test with a slew of benchmark software. Sometimes damage to the die doesn't show up immediately.

I had an Athlon XP 3000+ and chipped the corner of its die by mistake. The PC would boot into WinXP and work fine with no adverse symptoms for browsing, watching videos and some light gaming. But it would crash (not immediately) during 3D gaming and fail the 1st iteration in Prime95. Temperature had nothing to do with the failure as it was kept low with a full copper Thermalright cooler and arctic silver 2 (both were considered top level for air cooling at that time).

Here in Finland delidding usually gives more resale value since it saves time for the buyer.

My friend has my old delidded 7600K and he liked that it was delidded, even with his H270 board with no overclocking. Lower temps = less noise.

Practice could be one reason, I delidded a G3258 back in the day with a razor blade, the chip was cool even with the stock gum so there wasn't a huge difference in temps, IIRC a few degrees Celsius.. when I upgraded from that 7600K to a 7700K, I had the guts to delid it too with a razor (borrowed a tool for 7600K) and it went perfectly fine.

In general it hurts the resale value because it kills the warranty. I'm sure you can find a niche person that will be happy you did it for them, but that's an exception to the rule.

It's kind of pointless on an i5-9400. They are already silent with the stock cooler.

I think normal sale value of this CPU is 119USD. I believe pay the full amount and buy a cpu you have full warrantee and not tempered with. Delidding only helps temperature on non-k cpu. I must admit they do help a lot if done correctly.but alarm bells should ring when he says it helps improve performance of the cpu which is a false misleading information and bait for you to buy it.probably nothing is wrong with the cpu but be sure and buy brand new.

Seriously, how often a CPU has to be RMA'd? I've had one case and that was like 14 years ago when I received an used A64 3000+ which was DOA. Returned it to the seller, he RMA'd it and I got a new one. That OC'd like mad but that's a whole another story.

Unless you have trouble keeping the system quiet, there;s no reason to delid Intel CPUs. It's been tested that while the temps go down, you can barely squeeze 100MHz more in return. At 4GHz, that's 2.5% - absolutely negligible. Not to mention the CPU is guaranteed to work at the original temperatures anyway. Sure, a delidded CPU may last you 10 years instead of 5 or 7, but except for Sandy Bridge, I don't recall other CPUs worth hold on to for so long.

Long story short, you can do it to lower temps if you need to. Or you can do it for sport. But most people need not bother.

A new CPU almost never. A second hand one, probably more often than you'd think ;)

Seriously, how often a CPU has to be RMA'd? I've had one case and that was like 14 years ago when I received an used A64 3000+ which was DOA. Returned it to the seller, he RMA'd it and I got a new one. That OC'd like mad but that's a whole another story.

People still like to have a warranty. I just had to return a dead i5-9400 a few weeks ago. Luckily Microcenter took it back and I didn't have to wait on Intel to RMA it. It does happen, even if it is rare.
