Hello everyone, I have been browsing around to buy a gpu, I looked on FB Marketplace and I have seen several used RTX 2080 supers, 2080 ti's and 3070's between four and five hundred dollars for sale. This seems like a good price for these cards, however it almost seems to good be to true since theses cards, even used go for much higher on different sites such as Ebay for example.

I almost pulled the trigger on one of the cards but I wanted to reach out on here first.

Thank you.

I don't think Facebook has protections in case the card is fake or already dead, or if you get scammed. I could be wrong.

OP is in the states. It's not recommended unless they can test the card before purchase.

I have bought locally from facebook market. Picked up the cards from sellers house, and am not a noob so examined the cards myself, had no problems doing this at least twice with a 5700xt red devil and a msi 980ti. As long as you pick up the card yourself, you could even insist on seeing it running, i see no problem.

Facebook market is just a gamble like ebay really with exception you won't have eBay or paypal to cover you if you pay in cash up front.
I've bought a few small things from FB like manga and sold few things on there myself and haven't had any problems so far.

As long as the person can demonstrate it works it should be fine. The too good to be true prices are usually scams most people selling legit hardware know what it's worth in the current market.

I would stick with evga 30 series cards because they should still have 2 years of warranty left.

If i bought a gpu and pick it up from their house, it will work or they would have to refund. Usually if they are gonna rip you off, they won't ant you going to their house. I've had phone sellers saying they'll meet me in a pub car park, which is an obvious attempt at ripping you off.

Be careful, check the card, if possible see it working, and only pick up from their address.

The cards I was looking would be shipped to me, on some of the ads it says covered by purchase protection. Is FB Marketplaces purchase protection as good as Ebay's?

Like Craigslist, always require proof of post and never pay in advance. However, it's ok as long as you're cautious.

Pass on that.

No, FB has little to no protections.

Yup and that means meeting at a pc repair shop.

That is true, ebay, amazon have way more...

Fb market is a craigslist knock off.

I got scammed on Facebook. It was the first time I used it so I thought it's has to Ebay-level safe because the service comes from such large company.
Boy, I was wrong. Facebook marketplace is a Wild West. No option to dispute anything.
The seller insisted on bank transfer (rather than Paypal). At that time I didn't know it was a telltale of a scam (bank account number points to a person right ? not that easy.)
Lost few hundred £
(to clarify, that was: pay up front, get it shipped, in UK)

People get scammed on there all the time. I'd be leery of buying PC hardware from there without thoroughly testing it. That said, I sold a 1050ti and a 950 (two years ago) on there, and both were perfectly good cards that someone got a decent deal on.

The only things worth buying on Facebook Marketplace are mystery boxes sold by creepy dudes.

I have sold a few things on Facebook market place. Never had any issues but would I buy a GPU off there. No, in fact I would not buy a used GPU at all. Not unless it was dead for parts

I have bought a few things off local classified things..

I got a GPU off of FB. Advertised as a RX 480, picked it up in person. I inspected the card for damage, but that tiny print eluded my failing eyes. Turns out is was a 460. It was only $100, so I didn't really get scammed, ya know? Kind of the going price for a 460.

A year ago, I got an i7-4790k combo from a guy on FB and he mailed it. Didn't get scammed at all. But I dunno, old mobos don't seem to be as ripe with fraud as GPUs.

A few months ago, I did a local pickup for an RX 580 from offerup. Turns out the card was faulty and doesn't work at all. That one irritates me.

A few months ago, got a Ryzen 1500x, works like a champ.

Got a Ryzen 1600x back in May, works like a champ.

Did a whole Ryzen 3600 ram, mobo combo off of offerup from a guy about 130 miles from me. Paid on offerup and he shipped. Works wonderfully.

Did some other GPUs locally and all seem to work. One common denominator on the two deals that weren't 100%, both dues were kinda scruffy and had that hadn't showered in several days look and drove absolute junker cars. Everyone else looked like they had to get up and go to work that day....heck, one guy was a brewer at a craft brewery.
