Msi afterburner is the go-to for screen OSD and has screenshotting and screen recording features.

Depending on the GPU why not try shadowplay or amd radion relive? or do they not have the options you need?

There are several skins for msi afterburner.

I haven't had issues with fan speeds with it. I would also be hesitant if I had the problem you describe.

Nvidia shadow play used to be an option and I believe if you have Xbox services on windows enabled, that can also screen capture these days.

Other than those, the hardware route might be a better option.

Was it ever a thing? It was a cool utility for fps overlay, perhaps screenshots. But its fp1 codec was atrocious for videos! A couple of minutes of 1080p footage weighted gigabytes. And back then, storage wasn't as a given as it is today.

Besides, it's an abandonware at this point. Last version on the site is dated 2013. Just use OBS Studio or Shadowplay or whatever.

Fraps fails when HDR kicks in. So in new games unusable. I just use Nvidia drivers overlay but it has no CPU temp which annoys me.

Fraps works on Windows 10, the problem is that Fraps hasn't been updated in 10 years. So newer games that use newer DirectX 11 extensions, DirectX 12 or Vulkan won't work with it. It's also a very obsolete recorder that puts out giant files, since at the time it was developed, computers weren't fast enough to encode in real time while playing games.

Alternatives:

OBS Studio (free)
MSI Afterburner (free)
Mirillis Action! ($30, but often 75% off on Steam, with very reasonable regional pricing)

Fraps fails when HDR kicks in. So in new games unusable. I just use Nvidia drivers overlay but it has no CPU temp which annoys me.

Use Afterburner alongside CapFrameX - takes some time to configure to your taste but it's the best profiling tool

from a decade back it was THE program people used. small program file, huge high quality files. or half sized which was annoying. nothing in between and no compression options. on all yt videos it was what people used. I have nevr even knew AB was a thing for video recording till recently. but then again I wasnt obsessed with gaming as back then. I wouldnt leave the house for days and just played and ordered pizza.

I remember I was playing batman arkham asylum (I got really high scores on challenges) and thats what everyone used. that was in 2009

thats it?

133mb for a program? wth! fraps is like 4mb. pass

OBS can do much more than just show fps and record gameplay. 133MB is a tiny filesize if you ask me when thinking that modern GPU drivers take way more than just that. :D

no. not at all. not in my eyes. not for a screen recorder

I agree. gpu drivers are bullshit. they are way out of hand like the TDP and physical size for them. doesnt mean I want to install it cause gpu drivers are so big.

I always am suspicious of programs that are overly large when others are smaller and do the same thing. and this goes for anything. I always prefer choosing the program with the smallest file size. even foss apps from FDROID on my phone. I look at the file size. I feel today they slip in alot of nonsense. perhaps tracking/stealing data. I dont know obs but im not going to install a 133mb file to screen record.

I dont blindly install things.

It's broadcasting software for streaming and 133MB is peanuts in this day and age. I already have it installed and setup, so I just use the recording feature with it if I need to capture something. I know all about FRAPS as it used to be "FRAPS or it didn't happen," but time has passed the program by. The last release was in 2013 and supported compatibility ended at Windows 7. Fraps 3.6 was teased with Windows 10 support, but didn't happen.

Supposedly it still can capture gameplay video in Windows 10 from what I'm finding.

FRAPS was also developed like 10 years ago man, in an age where no one needed compression or codecs. You aren't going to find software that is modern much smaller than 100MBs.

it could be developed 30 years ago. doesnt make it not relevant for me or doesnt mean its not good. I use MANY old programs and have no reason to update. it aint broke dont fix it is my motto.

dont try convincing me what I accept or dont. im VERY selective about what I install.

Ok, let me put it another way.

You either are going to get modern codecs and larger installers, or install something with no codec support at all. There isn't an inbetween.

The last mention of it on here that I ran across was ~2016 when there was a tease of version 3.6. I haven't really heard it mentioned anymore since the last time I used it semi-regularly around 2014.
