Em building a new Ryzen pc

Ryzen R7 1700
MSI X370 SLI PLUS
Corsair LPX 3200MHZ 16GB
Samsung Evo 850 250GB SSD
WD black 1TB
GTX 1070FE
CM 690 which I already have
GX 750W Coolermaster which I already have

I want to ask is GTX 1080FE worth upgrade over GTX 1070FEW for 1080p? or should I buy a new case? I can buy a GTX 1080FE 2nd hand as price difference of 80$ is it worth an upgrade

Not really a 1070 is well powerful enough for 1080p. That is a good deal tho so really your call.

A 1070 is good for 1080p 60fps gaming @ Ultra settings.
Unless you want to play at Ultra and high fps if you have a G-Sync monitor then you could go for the 1080.

Non-founders editions run much cooler.

Have you considered 1070 ti?

Get that and oc it to gtx 1080 performance.

But i will reccomend you get a card with aftermarked cooler. They run cooler, less or no gpu throttle, less noisy and if you overclock aftermarked cooler are way better for that.

I guess the OP has to say what games he plays and the fps he's getting ATM, as well as the refresh rate of his display.

60 or 144 ?
60Hz I wouldn't do it since 1070 is enough and Q1/Q2 will probably see the introduction of new GTX cards. 144Hz I'd do it if the move doesn't end up costing too much , but waiting for the new gen cards will be a better option. We're already in mid-december. It's only a few months worth of waiting for ampere/volta or whatever it'll be called.

Important question is, what GPU usage are getting now with Ryzen at 1080p when you unlock the framerate ? If you're often seeing it drop below 90% then upgrading the GPU may not show its full potential. If it's +95%, ideally at 99%-100%, then you're good to go.

For 80 bucks, for sure do it. Its 25-35% performance, there is no way you will ever get that jump for less.

About 1080p - do not worry, I can tell you right now that as a 1080p user myself, a 1080 will already come in handy today, and definitely in a year's time. A big plus that the 1080 has and the 1070 does not, is that can also comfortably push 1440p60 at very high settings too, something a 1070 will be struggling with more often than not. And if you can do without AA and back off a bit more it will even do 4K at very playable FPS. The 1070 will not as it runs into bandwidth constraints.

ill get the higher video card model possible, in this case, GTX 1080 will be ideal for:
Better rasale value, future proof, yes a bit, the card will provide smooth experience over longer perior time, compared to lower models for sure, also the fact that can be idea if you plan to move to a better display or res,

as others stated, try to look for aftermarket cooling solutions from 3rd party merchants, such as Gigabyte, Msi EVGA just to name a few,

The 1080 brings little to the table at 1080p. Tho if upgrading I would never include an FE design on the list. A typical AIB scores 86.2 fps roight outta the box with 13% (97.2 fps) obtainable with an overclock. The 1080 FE delivers 97.6 outta the box and it's already throttling at that point.

https://tpucdn.com/reviews/MSI/GTX_1070_Gaming_X/images/witcher3_1920_1080.png

If it's cooling ya want, I have seem the 1080 Seahawk EK X w/ full cover EK water block for $550ish of late. I would bother with any CLC type things as the aluminum rads are weak and it does nothing foir VRMs and memory. Paired with a Swiftecj H240 or H320 (Or EK Phaoenix modular system, you can have a all cooper water cooling system for CPU / GPU for a very moderate investment.

A watercooled Pascal GPU will not clock higher FYI. Its just for giggles. You may gain 13-26mhz over the air cooled equivalent, just because you gain a few boost bins due to lower temp. Beyond that you run into voltage limitations, and only hard modding can circumvent that.

A little something about performance though @Abdullah Aman - if you don't miss any performance now, it is always wise to wait with hardware upgrades. Tech progresses fast and it is very likely you will get same performance at a lower price later in time - perhaps even with the option of getting a properly cooled 1080. So if you play at 60hz right now and intend to keep at 1080p for the time being, a 1070 will be sufficient for most games - as in 90% or more - for a while.

Exactly this. @OP new gen of GPUs might bring something of the same performance as 1080 for ~$300, new, with lower power draw, and you'll regret that $350 you spent on a loud ass 1080FE that's running out of warranty soon.

I've got the same dillemma cause I wanted to move from 1080 to 1080Ti, and decided no to for the same reasons:
1. The only way it would cost me reasonable amount of money is to get the used FE card that's hot and loud
2. 1080 OC is doing very well at 1440p
3. It's already mid-December, had I been able to find one sooner I'd do it, but not now. There are no games coming out now that'd require rushing it.

i have a 1080 and play @1080p and it consistently gets 100fps+ on all games whereas i had a 1070 previously and it does not do that. some games 100+ some games 80+

get 1080 if you play @144hz
