God what a painful day. Thanks all...

I suggested to create an image of Windows 7 with Clonezilla before upgrading to Windows 10. Took me 5 minutes reverting back to Windows 7.

Bolder then you think: before this, i had literally zero experience with Linux.

I have not tried Mint: so far, only Ubuntu 16.04 LTS.

Ubuntu used to be a lot better and more popular until the user interface was changed a few years ago, the developers followed Windows 8, created an OS for desktops with a smartphone user interface. Mint is based on Ubuntu, just with different set of user interfaces that are designed for desktops.

They've recently changed it back to a more traditional desktop type. The Unity thing was very unpopular and is gone. Give it look again.

Too late, too little, GNOME 3 is also considered to be lousy DE, they all deserve to burn for this. Mate, Cinnamon, Xfce are by far a lot better.

Took them years to understand that a desktop, is a desktop, not a smartphone. And if you try to copy Android (or iOS), at least do it right... Android is very clean, simple and easy to use.

That seems a little extreme, don't you think? I see your point though. When they intro'd Unity, I looked for a way to downgrade back to the previous version of Ubuntu. When that failed, I started trying out other versions and ultimately settled on Mint. Never looked back. For what I do on Linux, Mint is most excellent.
Mate, Cinnamon, Xfce are by far a lot better.
To be fair, there is Kubuntu(KDE, https://kubuntu.org/), Lubuntu(LXDE, https://lubuntu.net/) and Xubuntu(XFCE, https://xubuntu.org/), all with desktop environments to meet the needs of just about any user on almost any hardware.

Hell, Microsoft still has not figured that out. But I digress..
