Is it time to go over 4gb?

I'm noticing that if I drop the overclock on my chip and ram I get stuttering issues in a few games... I think this is pretty silly, not like it's a slouch of a chip.

So, re-setting my overclock and just got to thinking.... Have we finally come to a point where making the jump from 4gb to 8gb of ram is actually worth the money.....

Any take from one that has done it, or even gone from 6-12...

For gaming 4GB is enough for me... but for my general uses, 6GB is now, and 12GB barely... 18GB seems good enough for me and 24GB would be ideal but alas, $$ is not there lol

A few games, like The Sims 3, are starting to require 3+ GiB of RAM with all expansions installed. If your free RAM isn't getting below 500 MiB, I wouldn't buy more RAM. If it is, go for it. Just remember that you need a 64-bit OS to use more than 4 GiB of RAM.

Hmm, well i think for gaming 4GB is still the standard base amount and it'll take some time till it gets changed. And as times change and standards will move, i still remember when 2GB was all you needed, only the uber high end gaming rigs had 4GB in them because it was considered overkill lol. But look how it's changed, games these days will steam roll right over 2GB of memory, hence making the upgrade and standards change.

It really comes down to want you do, some people need more and some need less.

edit: Recently i actually had one of my 2GB sticks die out of my 6GB tri channel kit for my i7 system and so far it's not making a heap of difference in games so far.

Ya I'm definitely not getting that low, I always have over 1gb free no matter what game I'm playing.

eh, silly computers always feel slow to me and I'm not building a TEC cooled hex core clocked with 8ssd's in a stripe.

4GB is definitely the absolute minimum for comfortable use of several apps. 12GB is what I would be comfortable with. Just need cash!!

Unless the program is an actual x64 execute, more then 4GB is not needed for one program.

I've had my i7 with 6GB and yet to see anything take advantage. Almost all games push 3GB but once they go over (if they don't manage accurately) then I get a ctd because they violate the working space Windows has allowed for it.

What games are these anyway? What kind of cpu use are you seeing in game?

If your playing at your monitor's native resolution, you studder is more gpu related then cpu. Idk why your seeing it when you drop the overclock a little but swap to a 6870 or similar and the studder will probably go away.

seriously 1billion polygons rendered in zbrush still dosent use 4gigs ram nor does 60million in MudBox in real time rendering neither app uses the gpu very much saving the geometry to ram.

Use Photoshop CS3 and edit images larger the 8000x8000 with 40 filters and other images open
Use Adobe Premiere Pro etc

you wont need more then 4gigs In all seriousness ive yet to run out of Ram in with Windows 7 doing what i do daily and right now that would be...

and im only using 3.4 gigs of ram for all those apps still got enough space left over for an Indie game like Hegemony Philp of macedon.

but i suppose to each there own i had 8gigs at one point and sold 4gigs off as i didnt need it the only use i have for it now would be for a ram drive or something.

LOL ... And I've been on 1GB 533 ddr2 for the past 2 weeks. Beaten Star Wars Unleashed II on the HTPC with a gtx460 added in.

But yes, in this day and age, I think the more ram the merrier.

That's right. All 64-bit games, and all 32 bit with LAA bit set.

8GB allows me to keep the pagefile disabled were 6GB ( Old Axeram 1200's went faulty later might of been why ) did not for all my gaming needs. And i run a fair bit in the background too.

I'd never disable my pagefile. Maybe shrink it if I had an SSD, but there's a number of programs that don't function properly without it.

point is ive had no slow down lock ups or hitching etc etc no sluggish response 4gigs = fine for all uses theres not alot else i can run at the same time and actually be able to keep up with whats going on lol

4GB of RAM is plenty for a computer. If you are running an Intel system with triple channeling, get 6 GBs.

Unless you are into hardcore work with audio, video, or image editing, you do not need more than than the above listed. If you do one of this three things, put as much RAM in your system as you can afford.

My paging files are off and I have no issues. The programs you are talking about will create paging files even if they are off.....it is called Microsoft will do what they want in their OS.

if you use 32 bit it will useless coz the system will read it just about 3,25 gig the rest is untouched, except you use 64 bit, but depends the usage of your system, bigger is better anyway
