Is Limewire Illegal?

Well, many people use Limewire, and they have one version that is free, and one that you have to pay for. Are they Legal or Illegal? I'm not sure, so I'm asking.

the program itself is legal
what people use it for is oftentimes illegal, and as there is no way for the company to effectively block these "unwanted" transfers, the entity "limewire" is illegal

precede everything above with an "i believe"

i voted it's legal, cuz i think it is, for now, there hasn't a lawsuit against it specifically

my response to this is oblivion, where there was no copyright lock thingy, and it sold like hot cakes


i think a good step companies could take to combat piracy is to include better manuals again! and maybe some sweet maps, or posters, or something!

lol, mos def azureus (it's not one word i'm told, but the US version of azure) is the best bit torrent tracker out there (imo)

Illegal, safest way to do it is torrent, no one has been in trouble yet(I don't think)because it doesn't go thru a server.

But you can download music that is legal on certain website.

like others have said, these programs are technically perfectly legal. what can be illegal is the content you download. now there are plenty of things to download that are legal (not much) but its out there. Thats why no matter what any government agency does, there will always be different programs popping up everywhere. you cant block the right to share media as long as that media isnt copyrighted..thats where it starts to get hazy.

All these programs are legal to have. They just provide a potential means to illegal activity. Most songs you find on a program like limewire, will be illegal to download. You may do so anyway, but it is illegal. As a general rule. If it's a major label, book, film, program etc. that you would normally pay for, but you are downloading for free than what you're doing is illegal. Yes, you can listen to music, and watch music videos on sites like AOL music, but notice the annoying commerical you have to watch everytime? That's how it can be free. Stuff from Limewire, torrent sites, etc. do not have this, and you don't pay a dime. If you want to be safe, buy your songs and videos from itunes, or some other similiar place. The filesharing programs, while they can be 100% legal, are often for more shady operations, of which I don't want to see discussed here. How they are used is 100% up to the user.

Do not stray more into the world of warez than has already occured please.

azureus is not a bittorrent tracker, it a program that alows you to contact the tracker and connect up with the peers and seeders to download the file itself. the tracker is what is alowing you to connect to people who are also downloading the same files and help eachother complete the download.
