Is memory worth tweaking outside of lowering its voltage from an XMP profile?

This is the RAM I'm running.

DDR3 2400 (PC3 19200)
  • Timing 11-13-13-31
  • Cas Latency 11
  • Voltage 1.65V
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233778

Tried some different speeds/timing in the BIOS but in the end I've settled with just running it from an XMP profile and lowering the voltage by .1 to 1.55v. Then ran that through MemTest86 for one pass and it was stable.

Lowering pretty much any value in this pic outside of the Row Refresh Cycle Time results in instability or crashing when running at 2400 MHz. Thinking about just leaving it as it is(XMP @ 1.55v) as its pretty tedious when you go too low and have to short the pins on the motherboard...

Pretty much all DDR3 will run at their rated speed at 1.5v aside from that unless you're into your benching big time, lowering a couple of values here and there has no real world benefit

Edit: although you should set the command rate to 1T that does bring some performance increases (may also be under DRAM timing or something like that)

probably not that RAM.

That's the newer MFR/AFR.

Leave it like it is and see how high it goes.

I am running g.skill f3-2400c10-8gtx at 10,12,12,31,313,1t 1.65 volts. Nothing special, just the stock settings.

also JEDEC states that all ddr3 RAM has to be able to run at elevated voltages (1.65v) meaning the 1.65 will not hurt the RAM. Not sure about the memory controller...(Added heat etc)
it is lower voltages that you will get flakey /unstable RAM. (lower than the stated voltage on the package)
So make sure you do a 24hr prime95 on voltage reduced overclocked RAM.

1T could make his ram unstable. It does so on mine at 4,5Ghz oc on the cpu.
Ran it a short while and didn't find it much different besides some placebo feelings.
As for the memory controller, there was much debate about this several years ago, concerning sandy bridge chips and 1.65v ram.
If you stay at 1.65 or lower it shouldn't hurt the memory controller.
I found my ram could run at 1.575v but had the occasional lockup in some demanding games. So returned to xmp voltage 1.65v since I didn't want to slow down my cas timings.

So in which direction do you want to tweak? Higher frequency with slower timings? Or lower frequency and/or reduced timings/voltage ?
You could use a lower frequency with lower voltage and test for stability.
But imo you should just run it at xmp settings.

i found that my firestrike scores are a smidgeon higher with tight timings, and the system 'feels' snappier/smoother, but otherwise there is not much difference in benches.

Im running my G.skill TirdentX at a bit tighter adv timings.. Default seemed a little loose compared to my old Crucial Balisitx Elite 4x4GB kit OC'ed from 2133 CL9 to 2400MHz.

You could run that RAM @ 2400 probably much tighter on the secondaries.
TFAW 25...read to pre and ras to ras 7-8, trfc 137.Those look Samsung..run voltage @ 1.68 maybe. They can take a lot of voltage safely.

oh..and 12500 on trefi

I have one in this ..teh awesome setup: http://valid.x86.fr/e97mr1
1 notch higher bin stick than yours..basically same.

i'm running 2400Mhz C11 1.65v at 2133 C10 1.5v

cant go higher with my CPU, but i did manager lower voltage and tighter timings. Performance difference with the timings was very, very small.

But that RAM is a different animal entirely. That's probably going to be mfr/afr.

Hi

Thanks, will try those..

Trfc so low? I tried 214 one time and went into reboot cycle.. Does higher trefi compensate for lower trfc ?

My old crucial balistix elite did 193 and 214 at similar timings @2400mhz oc.. tfaw had to be at 37 though..

Edit:
Trfc at 137 no go, 170 also no.. 214 no...

ras to ras was already at 7, now I've lowered read to pre from 10 to 8.. tfaw to 28..

Btw i see 2 xmp profiles.. one is XMP1 2401 (Im using this), other XMP2 2399.. one has tighter tfaw other has tighter read to pre.. Im using the one at 2401mhz if that makes any difference or maybe affects other timings.

well this read to pre did some extra magic, never seen read so high - almost 36.3GB/s, this was in 1st run.
RAM2.png

Will try 7
But I remember when I first got this ram trfc was the first thing I lowered to 214 with everything else on auto and it didn't want to boot either.
Then I raised to 250, still no go, then 278 and it boot, then lowered to 262 and kept those.

My max OC with this ram is 2600MHZ CL11-13-13-31-1T, at least at stock 1.65v (reads 1.664v in bios)

EDIT2:
Now at read to pre 7, and its almost 36.5GB/s, interesting never seen my old or other DDR3 2400MHz CL10 this high :D

think I'll stop for now, need to run some games to be sure.. Here are my ram bios setting if you have any extra tips. :)

I'm guessing those are not Samsungs.Samsungs should do trfc 137 np..You probly have Hynix MFR or AFR
