Well over the summer i was building a PC under the tutleage of Snipermonkey2. However a problem arised due to a bad surge protector that I used and it over loaded my motherboard and power supply. My video card was fine, and now I have bought the parts needed to set up my computer and it works fine. My question is though, witht the 5 series out, is my video card out of date, or would it be good to get another one and crossfire them?

Not completely out of date...yet...but by this time next year, 100% for sure. single card should play most titles @ 1920x1080 and 4xAA without much issue, some will require no AA.

I have two 4870's crossfired as well. I think you will be just fine for at least another year, or until you want DX11 support. I can play anything I throw at them with everything on high @ 1680x1050.

Not 100% by any means, given the number of announced DX11 titles and the splurge of console ports.

Personally I'd keep the 4870 for at least another year, maybe get another cheap if you want a bit more poke. Wait for the next series of DX11 cards, the first series tends to not be that great once the API is in general use.

why are you asking people if its out of date???
if FPS satisfies you, then it's not out of date. simple as that.

Well, you still can sell the 4870 for some money, but when the DX11 games come in by the truckloads, then its too late to sell them. If you can find a buyer for 4870 at a good price (say, more than 100), then you might want to upgrade. otherwise its still very powerful.

Hmm... maybe I should go ahead and list my 4870. I was going to wait a while to sell it and then get a 5850, but if I wait too long I might not even be able to get $100 out of it. That makes me sad, I paid $200 for that sucker not even 6 months ago T_T

Thing is, the 4870's have already fallen in price quite a bit whilst the 5850's are actually increasing in price due to short supply. You might get $30 more now than in a years time, non hardcore gamers will still be after a decent card then. In my opinion, why pay top dollar for a first gen DX11 card which will be outclassed when the next series arrives, before theres even proper DX11 titles available? Just buy another cheap 4870 which in crossfire will match a 5850 for the games that are here now and in the near to mid future.

@ OP: What is the resolution of your monitor? Do you plan on upgrading your monitor if it is low resolution? What games do you enjoy playing, and what settings do you like to run games at or above?

The resolution of your display is almost the deciding factor of whether to upgrade your video card or not.

Nope, a 4870 is still a great card and can still play todays games at great settings.

But it all depends on you, does your current card do what you want?, Do you really want a DX11 card right now?.

If your current card is fine for what you're doing, then why upgrade?

Alright, well it sounds like it's still decent, so I'll upgrade my CPU and Ram first and foremost then.
