Is the Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor 540J With Hyper-Threading Tech. Still good for games today?I imagine it being the same as the AMD Athlon 64 + Processors, Reason I ask is because I have a old Sony Vaio(from last spring) and its still a kick ass setupI added a lot to it(RAM)All I really know is that It can run Counter-Strike:Source greatly not with the HDR effects though, lol. Back to the topic does anyone know if its still a kickass processor?

It can lay down some power, but you wont get top notch performance out of it.

They still have some power, but not enough for modern day high end gaming. I still use a p4 in my laptop, a 3.2gHz, but my a64 out performs it. By alot.

It's kinda good in an ok sort of way....kinda. You won't be maxing out your games but it'll run the medium settings well with a good graphics card teamed up with it. My P4 550ht pulled off a 9500 in 3dmark05 with a single x1950 pro.

It WILL bottleneck with the newer crossfire setups, especially the 2x X1950PRO/X1950GT setups. As Lazzer408 experienced, it sucks these days...

Core 2 Duo e4300 will be the best choice these days.

Whats so funny about an X300? Do you think we are dickheads or something? No. We are here to help.

My friends and I all own p4's except they have the 500 series
Mine has been great for css, fear, prey, farcry, oblivion, etc First person games.
Upped from x700pro to my current 1900gt

Gaming-wise i compare to my friend's 540 with 1900gt rev 2 the same. But in just processing theres a big difference between the 6xx and 5xx. simple stuff like winamp, ie, aim, and load times on games i see alot of choppiness. maybe its the cache or something but its really noticeable.

Anyways, will stick with this for a few more years unless I get a financial miracle or something.

If ur board supports it, go for pentium d's to be better than p4's but behind c2ds. the prices are great these days. But i would say for all the 04-06 games, p4's will be fine

the P4's still run ok i guess

its not like theyr celerons *shudder*

Heh I just put a Celeron D 352 3.2ghz on a Asus P5P800-Se its running at 3.6 solid all day perfectly smooth with good settings on Never Winter Nights 2 and no laggy crap..

I don't like Celerons myself, but that chip blew my mind.

Heh I totally couldn't agree with you more... Those first ones were completely useless... These ones seem a lot better as long as you put them in a decent mobo.
