Is SATA 3.0 backward compatable?

Can I put a sata 3.0gb/sec harddrive in a computer that has a 1.5gb/sec in it? Its a dell that I'm fixing for a friend

yes u can the difference is ..the hard drive will be working at 500 percent of hes capacity

Yes, they both are compatible. The drive will just run at 1.5Gb/s. It won't affect performance any though as the drives don't max out 1.5Gb/s yet.

no fact is drives wont see a major difference in speed with 1.5 or 3.0

its just that 3.0 will be faster but dont get worried its not anything that should be of consern

sata 3.0 drives aka sata 2 are sata 1 compatible

it will just go to being the slower 1.5

hes taking crap its not going to half in capacity or drop in capacity it will stay the same amount of gigs it will just be on a slower data transfer it shouldnt be a problem tho as drives that use 3.0 still dont manage to use up all of that some drives
