You can see my specs to the left. I use my PC for gaming, occasional encoding, and Photoshop. If I were to sell the CPU, mobo, and GPU with waterblock (all around $575), would it be worth it to put the funds towards an i5 2500k, a motherboard and a 6870 and overclock the crap out of it? Keep in mind I will have the i5 CPU under water. Feel free to vota and explain. Thanks. :toast:

If you go SB, go all out and get 2600K with 4 core 8 threads, also good luck selling your current hardware. my 1156 quad is not selling so hot :(

I just can't afford it. If I could, most definitely would, but I need a balance between a good CPU and a good GPU. If I were to get the 2600K I'd have to get a GTS 450 or something, but if I get the 2500K, I can get a better GPU.

I want to, but I'm worried about what the value of my current parts will be by then. When 2011 is released, my i5 750 will be worth around $135 or $140, my motherboard will be worth $80 or $85, and my GPU/waterblock combo will be worth around $280. That gives me about $500 to play with. Getting a 2011 board, CPU, and a respectable GPU will be next-to-impossible.

Sorry, but for comparison sake there's a guy selling two 6970's for $550. I want em and I can figure out a way to get them but if my 5850's don't sell I'm screwed. But I don't need em.

You don't need that either. Your system rocks, enjoy it a while.

I don't see the point in changing hardware for any reason, even though you didn't give us any inclination to what your computer is used for. Even if you used your computer for tasks that SB would do better in, performance increase is minimal. Don't bother.

I cant bealive i went down to a 750 from a 920. Im jumping on SB as fast as possible. I cant describe in accurate words how much I hate this system. IMO it is noticably slower then my old 920. if SB is supposed to be even negligibly faster then 1366 id go for it.

I'm going from 1366 to 1155, smaller increase but less expensive. Admittedly even if you wait till 2011 the increase isn't going to be as amazing as stuff in the past like going from a X2 to a conroe.

Sure you can get a SB setup like a 2600K, Asus P8P67 Pro (for example) and some 1.5V G.Skill 1600MHz ram but did you already weigh the options for a SB setup vs a i7 860 or i7 875? What is it you are looking to get out of it other then daily use? Are you just looking to upgrade because it's something you do? Or something else?

What do you want to do, what does your current system not do?
Articles I've seen say SB does very well on simple settings and air, getting beyond that much more problemical and individual chip dependent. TEMPS AND Volts low!
OTOH performance rocks. So would an "easy" 4.5 OC and a fight for every .1 beyond with stability function dependent make you happy?
I'm a cheapskate and new to hobby, would be perfect and teach me nothing, if I could afford it .
What's your dream/ your budget/intent?
First post, hope not off topic.

I basically asked him the same thing.
Based on the answer should let him know which direction to take.

Anyway what is supposed to be the temps of a sb?

My bud's 2600K is being fed a steady diet of 1.5 vcore at 5.3GHz for a load temp of around 41c on water....and he is relentless at benching.

It does everything perfectly well, I'm just trying to see if there's more performance for my dollar. My budget is whatever my CPU, GPU w/ water block, and mobo sell for. My intent is to have a respectable system that overclocks very well and lasts a long time.

Are you just looking to upgrade because it's something you do?
To be honest, yes. I want to upgrade because I want 5GHz and because I haven't done anything with my hardware for so long. :p The extra performance would be great as well.

If you want to upgrade to tinker with it to see if you can get 5.0GHz most wouldn't ask. They would simply do it and post pics on the forum. So that's something you need to figure out.
A. Keep what you have
B. Get SB to see how much of an OC you can get.

I'm mainly doing it to see if the performance is worth it, the whole "my e-peen is big because I hit 5GHz" thing is secondary. :) I'm also talking about the GPU here; Are a 2500k and a 6870 going to be at least 15% or 20% better than my current setup?

It would be expected to see some minimum frame rate improvements when OC'd, etc. But as to percentages I suggest look at a review. The highest gains would be CPU dependent games though. Another good demonstration would be a review using i7 and SB using both 6970 CF and 580 SLI using GPU bound games as benchmarks. But I've not found such a thing.

I've been looking as well and found this. It compares CPUs against each other. It's only stock speeds though, so overclocking performance is not represented. Nor is anything GPU-related.

I found this review using SCII (CPU bound). Now take a look at Metro 2033 (GPU bound). Take note of the 760 vs 2600K looking at both bar and line graphs. These are still at stock clocks though. So again, the ball is in your court.
