Is the 3090 really the titan card?

Maybe am over-thinking it or perhaps even confused but would like to explain what i mean.
when we head over to the nvidia page this is what it read.
3090.PNG

"3090 is a big ferocious GPU (BFGPU) with TITAN class performance ", titan class performace? that's a strange phrase to put there when this gpu is supposed to be THE TITAN. what's even more weird is that during the entire page of the 3090 the word titan only appears once, and only on the sentence "TITAN class performance".

if i have a ford, mod it and can get lamborghini class performance, i still got a ford with lamborghini class performance not a lamborghini.

let's go back to the presentation and see what jensen said about the 3090 been a titan at 34:12

"Several years ago, we started building the Titan, pushing the GPU to the absolute limit.
to create the best graphics card of that generation. "
"It was built in limited quantities and only through NVIDIA. The distribution was limited. The demand surprised us. "
"Creatives were making 4K movies, rendering cinematics. "

"There is clearly a need for a giant GPU that is available all over the world."
"So we made a giant Ampere. Ladies and gentlemen, the RTX 3090.
"

The word titan in that whole presentation appear twice:
at minute 34.15 "Several years ago, we started building the Titan, pushing the GPU to the absolute limit, "
at minute 35.27 "10 times quieter and keeps the GPU 30 degrees cooler than a Titan RTX design."

notice at the end when he said
"There is clearly a need for a giant GPU that is available all over the world."
"So we made a giant Ampere. Ladies and gentlemen, the RTX 3090.

they made a giant ampere GPU and according to the nvidia website, that giant gpu
"3090 is a big ferocious GPU (BFGPU) with TITAN class performance "

so is this a giant titan like gpu OR is this really the next generation titan, because the message seem very foggy coming from nvidia.

Pretty sure its literally what he said. this is TITAN level performance. It wont be the same as price is quite different and i doubt they were spending all this time just trying to reduce costs.

It is confusing but all is supposed to be a longterm marketing strategy, they know how to make new segments.

Titan RTX is taken, Titan A may be the HBM2 card, so what else can it be titan small a. Besides the full enabled GA102 10752 Cuda, yet to be released so Titan Aa RTX.

i reckon the titan should have its own number for example RTX 300 Titan, next one is RTX 400 Titan... Keeps it simple at the moment its all over the place with naming lol.

up to now Titans were based on the full 02 class die. Now 3090 will be based on that die. so in tah trespect it is.

To make new Titan Nvidia will have to use to modified A100 die - which sells in servers for at least 10000k so Nvidia will never make that Titan and sell it for 1800.

They may make a binned version of 3090 with higher clocks and double Ram if they need to. But the yhave to be desperate as it would dilute the Titan brand.

I'm pretty sure Nvidia said last week that the 3090 occupies the same space in the hierarchy as the 2080Ti does today. He's just saying it will be Titan-level peformance, if we use current gen comparisons.

All started with Kepler, top desktop geforce 680 had xx104 gpu as it was good enough to battle with top desktop radeon at the time. So they reserved xx100 or now xx102 gpu for top geforce and named it Titan or add Ti. Now gpu in 3090 is to fast to be 3080, so just new number instead Titan or Ti. They are moving up the ladder, unfortunately AMD climb up only with one arm and one leg. But rdna2 on superior 7nmEUV can change that, we should all hope so, otherwise nvidia will climb to high and price it accordingly.

The more i see this the more i feel that we just got a new segment hierchy introduced to us.
maybe wont happen during this generation gpus, but i would now not be surprised if the next gen gpus - 4000 series, 5000 series -
you see the top end hierchy go xx70 xx80 XX90 XX90ti -TITAN-.

As per the slides with the GPU diagram for the 3090 , it yelds that it is NOT a full fledged chip so anything is possible after that . Maybe when they count to 1000 such full chips that can also clock higher and sustainably, heck why not? , I for one would . I guess, after all its missing a 16th or less.

I don't think so.
Question is, when they say "Titan class performance" do they mean to say that it is a Titan replacement or just that it is in that "class"? It wouldn't be surprising if they released an actual Titan card, but then that would be a pricey card.

Who even cares really. In the history of these cards there were just two Titans that really weren't meant for gaming, the first Titan because of the FP64 performance and Titan V because of the Tensor cores. Other than that, they were just ridiculously expensive cards for those with money to spare, they offered no real extra compute features. They know very well who these are really for.

And keep in mind that this "3090" still has a higher than usual Titan "tax". Kepler, Maxwell and Pascal titans were all under 1200$, this one is 1500$. Nvidia tried to spin in such a way to make it seem like you are getting a "cheaper" Titan, but in reality it's even more expensive than usual. RTX Titan probably didn't sell very well so here we are.

It's supposed to be a "Titan for everyone". It is the successor of the Titan RTX, with a price cut.

RTX Titan kicked ass but(and it's a BIG but) it had a $2500 price tag.... $1500 is back down to a something reasonable.

This is the pascal launch all over again. Plus NV absolutely loves to milk their high end customers and then troll them by releasing a $900 card that performs within 10% of the $1400 card they bought 4 months ago.

I think based on the way things are phrased the Titan segment is being pushed to be more professional category and the 3090 is the gamer Titan (Like the X080ti cards but stuff with ram). That is what I think currently.

Seems logical, but then what are they going to call it? Will it be a Titan card but aimed at the professional sector?

I always thought of the Titan was the bridge between Pro series cards and Gaming Series cards ... if you needed to render, you installed a Quadro ... if you wanted to game you bought a GTX / RTX . If you wanted to do both in one box, you bought a Titan. In my industry. if you wanted to build 2D / 3D AutoCAD workstation (Vector Graphics) your bought GTX / RTX because Quadro was slower .... If you wanted to render those drawings you bought Quadro cause it was faster. So an office w/ 10 workstations, might have 1 rendering and 9 CAD boxes. If you wanted to take work home, do both and play some games, you bought a Quadro.
