I guess the atomic's rarity and its overclocking ability is a lure. 1060/1250 by some.

Seeing as reference 4890's can clock to 1GHz, I don't see the 'desire' for the Atomic outside of not having to OC yourself, pretty shiny box and the 'limited' edition appeal.

I for one am currently tossing up between the Asus 4870x2 Tri-Fan or a Toxic 4890 to tide me over until the DX11 cards. Hmmmm

Most reference 4890's do not make it to 1000Mhz without a voltage increase. The OC editions of these cards that stock at or around 1000Mhz, use binned gpus.

The core clock is lower though, it's 960. It's currently in stock at Newegg and going for 260usd.

I will buy the Toxic today but, The answer I have been searching for is: WILL IT OVERCLOCK
BEYOND 1000MHZ core LIKE THE ATOMIC! THE ATOMIC WILL HIT 1060MHZ STABLE. Erocker will answer this question today as he expects shipment this afternoon.

The XFX card actually had the highest memory OC which helped it vs the Atomic HD 4870 which did a higher core clock.

Yes and no. Atomic cards have GPU's binned to run at 1000mhz all the time. Toxic's GPU's are binned to run at 960mhz 24/7. That doesn't mean the Toxic's GPU can't run 1000mhz 24/7.

Not anytime soon but I will eventually. I really like this cooler, set at 60%, idle gpu temp gets all the way down to 37c. At 68% I can hear it over all of my loud(ish) tri-cool fans on high. At 100% it's wickedly loud, and no one would ever need to set it that high, but if you do dive into vmodding the card you have a lot of flexibility with the fan.

As I am a novice in some areas - binning is? Is it a simple software/hardware restriction, or something like a modchip on a Xbox etc - where you are infact damaging the card.

As the Atomic = Toxic in terms of same card + cooler - cant one SAFELY and SUCESSFULLY run at Atomic speeds [1000/1050] 24/7?

While CCC passes 1070 I'm quite sure there will be an application to crash it. Core temps never went over 55c with 60% fan speed on a Vantage run at 1ghz. Cooling won't be a problem with this card. Honestly, I'm not big on overclocking Qimonda GDDR5, 135gb's of bandwith is plenty for me.

if you stick with the voltage set by your bios, increased gpu core wont damage it, so if it runs at 1ghz stable 24/7 , i say keep it at that.

I've ran 1200 stable. 1250 is too high. Unstable sets in.

It runs every game out @ full settings and 1920x1200. Why overclock?

Those results are a bit off. If you look, they aren't consistent at all. Compare the Sapphire and the Asus. The Sapphire get 1000+ more points with 9 more mhz on the core, but significantly slower mem. The vmem is just not a bottleneck in 06. Not to mentio, 06 is so cpu bound, that cards at this level of performance are very inconsistent, as they aren't pushed to their max at all. Vantage would be a much better comparison.

I would have much preferred they did the overclocking comparison with a DX10 game @ 1920x myself.

Outside of e-peen marks, people shouldn't sweat the whole thing. Example; a stock HD 4890 vs the Atomic @ 1920x in FC2 with AA = a difference of 5FPS. That's 53 vs 58FPS. I doubt that can be felt.

I'm after a Toxic primarily for its acoustic and thermal characteristics.
