Hi,

I'm building a higher end pc for Video editting (mostly AE) doing heavy animation work and will be needing all the RAM I can get. Recently, there's been news that the i9-9900K will be able to support 128GB ram which is great news for me. I was wondering if this RAM was compatible with my CPU and MOBO?

Here are my specs:

RAM: SAMSUNG 32GB 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM Registered DDR4 2666
LINK: https://www.newegg.ca/Product/Produ...e=samsung_32gb_ram-_-9SIAAYY76K8753-_-Product

MOBO: ASUS ROG Maximus XI Hero Z390
LINK: https://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813119150&cm_re=z390-_-13-119-150-_-Product

CPU: i9-9900K

Thanks!

I dont think registered dimms are supported on the 9900k's platform.

That being said you dont really need them for what you're doing... u might want to go x399 or x299 and use 16gb lower density dimms in quad channel

Hi Phan, thank you for your input.
Are there any RAM you could recommend in my case?
Honestly i would look at a workstation platform with quad channel and 8 memory slots - 32gb dimms are so expensive that going to a different platform would be the same price if not cheaper if your goal is 128gb... a threadripper or i9 /xeon platform

putting together a newegg.ca cart to compare...

Threadripper build: -$2550

i9 build with that mobo and ram (NOT including the $680 processor: - $2900

Workstation is faster and cheaper than consumer trying to workstation...

just motherboard and ram.PNG

You're basically paying double on ram to cram 128GB into a consumer platform at this time... ~$3600 for consumer vs $2550 for workstation which is actually faster in multithreaded and has higher mem bandwith - same would apply to intel X299 (although you would pay more for the higher single threaded performance).

here is an intel 7920x build:

would be about ~$3100 (newegg.ca has some quantity issues)... but the 7920x is faster than the 9900x in multithreaded, and you're still saving about $500.

Hi,

Thank you for the informative post. While I agree 100% that the AMD route would be more ideal for me, the reason I picked a CPU like the i9-9900K (which I know is overpriced for its value but money is not a huge concern for me) is because benchmarks show that a program like After Effects scales well with single high core clocks, rather than having multiple cores and threads while running slower clock speeds. I could have chosen the 8700K but needed the extra 2 cores that comes with the CPU. And the reason I would ideally like 128 GB of ram is due to the RAM PREVIEW of AE (aka pre-caching the video preview during edits). The more RAM I have, the more I can pre-cache what I am editting. 64 GB is currently not enough for the type of intensive workout I am doing (which is animation & motion graphics).

With that said, it seems like my MOBO cannot support any 128 GB modules with 4 slots... However, the i9-9900K is set to support 128GB ram in the near future... Are there any 128 GB ram setups I can buy that would be compatible with my MOBO (or perhaps another z390 MOBO that supports 128 GB?)

That is where you grab a list of all proven kits known to work with that motherboard.

I have parts (below) that are not on the XI Hero's list... Does this mean all 3 of these parts will not work?
