I am planning to buy a new laptop and this is an upgrade available for the laptop. Is it worth it?

Sure, i guess...but i dont see the point. Does your laptop need EAX 5.0? Is it a gaming laptop?

Is it actually a physical hardware extra, or that dumb dell software package.

I think it's the actual hardware.

Extreme audio cards dont have a DSP... aka sound processor. Worthless IMO. You'll get slightly higher quality sound at a steep cpu expense.
