This isn't a debate about who's better, rather just a very simple poll with 2 choices just to guage roughly what percentage of people are using Intel vs AMD.

Reason behind the poll is most gamers pre ryzen were predominantly Intel though now that Amd has caught up in performance (for the most part) there are a lot of ryzen based threads and users so I think it would be interesting just to see the rough numbers.

THIS IS NOT AN AMD VS INTEL THREAD, NO EXPLANATION IS REQUIRED ABOUT YOUR CHOICE SO PLEASE KEEP THE FANBOY COMMENTS AND FIGHTING OUT OF IT OR I WILL GET A MOD TO CLOSE IT.

In short, keep it nice :)

I have several but the main is intel. I think zen 3 and a B550 is when i would be really tempted to switch.

AMD for personal main rig.

In process of changing to AMD at Enterprise level also apparently. It became so attractive it was decided it was worth going through process.

AMD market share at end of 2nd quarter was 23.1% returning to levels last seen in Q2 2015

Currently we are using / recommending ...

Intel (Primarily 9900KF) for Gaming, Office Suites, Photoshop, Premiere, AutoCAD Consumer / Prosumer and Professional Office
AMD Ryzen CPUs (primarily 3900X) for rendering and software development Consumer / Prosumer
Intel Workstation CPUs for production level video editing / rendering / animation

I think TPU will be a pretty even 50/50 split (maybe a 60/40 to intel). We are AMD heavy over here :D

Says what? I'm not disagreeing, just wondering where you got that information. Was a poll taken pre-ryzen?

Also, not sure how gamers factor in this - "this" being based on the poll's question. Gamers are really a small portion of the total number of computer users out there. And I know several computer users (a lot, actually) with multiple computers (including yours truly) who do NOT consider their gaming rig as their "main" computer.

3700X, so AMD as of 3 weeks ago. 4790K still kicking around, have all the parts necessary minus a case to stick it onto the TV.

My main rig has without a single exception, been Intel for as long as I've been into computers. This marks the first (and possibly the last) departure from that rule.

AMD has never touched my ultrabooks. They don't have the years of thermal know-how to make it work, sorry.

they restarted the CPU arms race, so anything you buy now is going to be obsolete this time next year. Which is nice, but makes me want to stick to swapping out the x600 and i5 chips.

This makes no sense to me. IMO, the decision should be made for each purchase, at the time of purchase, based on the requirements for that specific computer, and the budget.

To me, saying "any new purchases will be [________]" is just buying based on personal biases and not actual technical specification. Just because I like McDonald's Quarter Pounder better than Burger King's Whopper does not mean all sandwiches at McDonalds are better than every sandwich Burger King has to offer.

I am an AMD fanboi but my main rig is Intel/Nvidia.
I'm happy to see AMD catching up.
Imo the only advantage AMD really has is not needing to upgrade platforms for every other generation.

Wouldn't the OP's question be better served by watching steam hardware surveys?

I know what steam hardware survey says, this is just the demographic on tpu as its an tech enthusiast site.

Bill regarding the gamer comment again this is aimed at just the people on tpu who a large proportion of are gamers with gaming rigs as their main rig, though I'm generalising, apologies for not covering everyone..

I just went back to AMD a couple of weeks ago (3800x). Still have a 7700k in my wife's rig, and 2 of my kids have a 2200g in their rigs, while my older son has a 1600x in his, and my oldest son has a 8086k in his rig. I go for what is best for usage case and is cost effective. So we do both in our house, depending on what is best bang for buck within the budget at the time.

If you think about it they are about the same... it's just whether you spend the money up front and hold the socket with that chip until it dies, or spend it incrementally and like to tweak your systems.

If you bought an 8700K and overclocked it... you got better performance than the 1700/1600x, 2600x, slightly better than a 3600x in games and, most likely the slightly slower than a stock 4600 zen 3 (assuming 10-15% improvement) - at which point AMD will ditch the socket (rumored).

The difference is whether you spend the money up front, or save up front and spend the same amount of money incrementally.

I bought the 7820x OC'd@4.7 with tuned ram and stupid x299 mobo, which i bought over 2 years ago performs EXACTLY the same as a 3700x in games and most benches game benches are eerie in how the FPS is identical; bought it over the 1700/b350 when it came out.

If I went AMD would have bought 1700, sold it for a ~$100 loss, 2700, sold that for a ~$100 loss, then the 3700x which would have overall cost me roughly the same $550 I paid initially for the 7820. So in the end you end up basically the exact same amount of money and end up at the same performance.

I guessing wildly the 9900ks will be about on par with a 4700/x in games (assuming they get a bit more demanding by then) and slightly slower in productivity apps. So if you buy that now @$500 or the 3700x @$329 and then sell it at a loss to buy the 4700 when it comes out you'll end up in generally the same spot $/performance wise.

My gaming PC is Intel, as is my in-house server, but our laptop is an AMD, and the reason I'm here to begin with is my old AMD Opty I was trying to clock :). I'm not so much a brand-specific fan, as one determined to find the best value for the longest life.

Oh? Are you sure about that? I would not make that assumption at all!

I do believe that "many" of the regulars here are gamers, but I know many are not. And many more just game occasionally. The majority of the time, they use their computers for other things. I play games on my gaming computer but I don't consider myself a "gamer".

As for the actual gamers, do most only have one computer that is used primarily for gaming? Or do most have more than one computer and do they consider their gaming rig as their "main" computer?

Sorry, but I just don't think your survey question is valid. If you want to know what processor people use in their "gaming" rigs, ask that. If you want to know what people use in their "main" computer, ask that. But don't assume they are the same computers.

IMO, it is invalid, and more importantly, inaccurate to assume gaming rigs and main computers are one in the same for most users - even though they may be for many.

Edit add: For the record, I voted based on my "main" computer, not for the computer that is used primarily for "gaming" in this house.
