If not, the UK based gaming web site "game-debate.com" listed a future proof plan (assuming 1080p 60FPS gaming) with your PC specs for 2020, 2021, and 2022 along with an "average community member" PC. Unfortunately I'm not a member so I only have access to the 2020 future proof build. They also use some obscure parts that may not be available here in North America so I posted similar gaming performance parts using TPU and Tom's hardware reviews. Enjoy, congratulations if you are future proofed maybe you get a RGB case badge if you are member? If you are not future proofed then I guess you sit in the corner in shame...or just carry on gaming.

Average Game-Debate PC build

AMD Ryzen 5 -2600E or Intel I7 3960x (equivalent to Ryzen 1600 in gaming although the intel is eight years old...)
Nvidia GTX 980ti or AMD Vega 56 (Nvidia GTX 1060 6Gb to GTX 1660ti)
RAM 18 GB

Future Proof AAA game for 2020 recommendation

Intel i7 990x or Ryzen 2500x (...so one CPU is eight years old and the other one is an OEM 4c/8T...ballpark of Intel I7-4770...but numbers are all over the place for both CPUs)
Nvidia GTX 980ti or AMD 480 4GB (GTX 1060 6Gb to AMD 570 4GB)
RAM 11GB

So there you have it. To future proof you need either an eight year old Intel six core CPU or obscure OEM Ryzen CPU...and you may have to cut one of your 8GB RAM sticks in half...

Let me get this straight for average Gaming a Vega 56 and for Future Proof a 480/Polaris card? Then from 18GB (How the hell do you get 18GB of RAM???) or 11?

i feel like the #1 way to waste money is to try to future proof your pc. By the time the future hits there's stuff wayyyy cheaper and faster -- there's some exceptions like the 2500k, 8800GTX, 1080Ti (which has lasted FRVR in the high end). But otherwise it's better just to upgrade more often, and just the buy the gear that can run your games today and nothing more.

If you truly want to future proof, take the money you saved on cheaper gear and invest it in AMD or nVidia and then when you're ready to upgrade sell and use the gains :D.

This site is pure troll tho lmao.

Some of their reviews and recommendations are OK but I think the article was written more based on their database stats and no one actually looked it over to see if it made sense then as click bait. Believe it or not but they have more daily views then UK based tech sites kitguru and bit-tech.

Now I'm even more unimpressed with the site. They put up an article without even reviewing it to see if it makes sense?

Also how big a site is doesn't always translate to quality. IGN and PCGamer are both large gaming sites for example.

Sometimes you're just lucky and "score" a future proof build - like the socket 2011 build I'm running. If you look at games they are slowly starting to use more cores and old 4+ core CPUs can keep up with modern ones due to single core performance not being so important.
However everything else that used and uses more cores gets a massive uplift on newer generations, but I still don't have a reason to upgrade.
Every time a new generation of CPUs launch I just smile and of the performance jump it will be when I finally upgrade!

IGN, a site whose game reviews are consistently out of synch with the consumer ratings. I’ve watched some of their play also, and rank amateurs who are clueless in FPS for instance is my impression.

Anywho, I just offer that up as more validation that it doesn’t matter how big a site is.

Quite frankly, I’m amazed that a 980Ti is good for several more years of AAA gamelplay according to Game Debate. :banghead:

Noob question: when should i upgrade the CPU? I can play all games right now btw. Getting a 9700K or KF will do the trick for 3 years or should i stick with the 9600k? Thanks!

Stick with the 9600K until it starts stuttering / you notice it not performing well, then upgrade to whatever the 9600k / 3600 / 4600 is at the time.

6 cores is going to be enough for another couple of years.

I went from an OC 8600k @ 4.9ghz to a 9700k and I see no difference in gaming. The 8600k ran through every game I had with ease and the only reason I upgraded was because I received a sweet deal on the 9700k. The 9600k will easily last you three years (if not more) especially if you OC it.

Stupid.

You can't future proof a computer.
You can't determine what "future proof" even means because gaming experience differs between each individual. Maybe someone must have 4k, maxed settings at 60fps and their next door neighbor is content with 1080p on medium/low settings with 45+fps.

I hate the term "future proof"....it's kind of like a scare tactic to get people to upgrade their systems even if it's not needed.

Your gaming needs are your own and only you can determine if you need to upgrade your system to meet your expectations.

So there you have it. To future proof you need either an eight year old Intel six core CPU or obscure OEM Ryzen CPU...and you may have to cut one of your 8GB RAM sticks in half...

Quick, where's my Ebay login, what if they're all gone? The RAM issue is easily solved though, hell in fact, you could build 2x as many rigs now with the same sticks.

Stupid.

You can't future proof a computer.

Sure you can but the correct term is headroom and investment.

PC parts are simply on a performance scale, if you buy more performance, it will be relevant for longer, which is effectively more future proof than 'just cutting it' for todays' usage.

Anyone who says future proof needs to think about time frame of use and readiness to upgrade; especially lately its been very possible to future proof in a big way, as core counts have skyrocketed.

When I think of "future proofing" I'm reminded of 2 people who pursued that philosophy.

One of them posted an extremely high end build and said he didn't want to have to touch it for 5 years. The only thing about his build that I remember was that he wanted to use 4 Titan Maxwells in Quad-SLI. This was about 4 years ago. Even then with SLI well supported this was a really bad idea. A couple of years later and Developers started backing away from supporting SLI. He was proposing spending $4,000 on cards to "future proof" his rig for 5 years. Well, look how that turned out. He would have been far better off buying 2 Titan X then and a 2080 Ti when that came out and would have saved $800 on top of it.

Another bought a Titan Z for $3,000 and was angry shortly thereafter when he said that Nvidia wasn't supporting his card as well when the Maxwells came out. He said he expected his card to be well supported for 8 or 9 years due to how much he paid for it. The fact is that by the time Maxwell came out the Keplers had already been optimized about as much as they ever would be.

How many people a couple of years ago even thought that real time ray tracing in gaming would begin to become a thing now?

Trying to build a "future proof" rig is like trying to drive in fog and see what's miles ahead. We can only see a short way ahead with any certainty.

I7 990X future prof for games, yeah right and there charts are probably based on stock CPU's as well.

And as one that has a i7 980x, I can say for sure at stock it's not a pleasant experience to game on. With a good overclock, it's some what works. But there are games now from 2019 that can bring my I7 980x oc 4.4 ghz cpu down to point where it's no longer suitable for a game cpu.

This site is full of BS.
