issue with my 3tb hard drive Toshiba model

im having issues with this hard drive
i cant seem to assign a drive letter to it, and its not visible to the windows file explorer any more
im tryng to restore this disk but it wont let me . oh and the system some times doest want to boot if its pluged in :/ but the bios still sees the device

but when i swap the sata connections it wil boot but the problem still stays the same... i got a new system i know where where issues like this before like having sata settings to IDE instead or raid/achi. and i got a new system resently

Disk Management to assign a letter. right click...use GPT

If its not there or wont let you your drive or wire is borked

Until its activated, formatted and has a letter it will not show up in the file explorer

I had a Toshiba throw up like this recently. Ended up being a case of the drive failing. Never even reported any smart signs, just silently died...

That's the $100 question, try a USB enclosure on another PC
This will confirm its not your PC or wiring. And hopefully it helps get your data off

If you really really need the data (mission critical or otherwise valuable), you can pay a data recovery specialist and get some of it most likely.

Or try the above posters idea for free, but be advised it can also damage your chance of recovery further if it fails and the drive truly is crashed.

Also be advised hdd recovery services are costly.

Also, it sounds weird, but I have heard putting a recently failed hdd in the freezer for a bit (properly protected of course) can sometimes bring them back for a bit. That's really not one I'm sure I believe, but if all else fails, why not try?

Good idea, but remember, RAID is not a backup.

HDDs in these days are garbage. just like floppys in the 90s compared to late 2000s.
everything must be as dirt cheap as possible, drives got slower with SMR and their reliability is below the worst from 10 years ago.
if you need storage check out some QLC SSDs like the Samsung 870 QVO which goes up to 8TB if you want to safe some money. but spinning rust in anything else than a NAS or a server is a big no.

I've heard this from a few others, not sure where its coming from. SSDs are preferred for small drives, but new platter hard drives are hitting over 200Mb/s and a failure rate below 2%.
And platter drives are really better for storage. If an SSD fails its gone. Hard drive fail slowly and warn you most of the time.

OP just buy what on sale and back up

yeah and writing small files in the 1.X MB/s ballpark.
and not even Videogames run properly with HDDs anymore (especially games like WOW where a SSD is a minimum requirement.)
but i still bought two HDDs (WD D10 with enterprise HDDs inside) around a year ago and the first one died after a week, the replacement after a month.

meanwhile my mom still has her OCZ Vertex in a laptop from over a decade ago, my four MX500s are 100% fine with zero dead blocks or other issues.
my two 4TB 870 QVO (one has written over 100TB) are fine, my 870 Evo is working as intended, my two 970 EVO Plus drives are fully functional.

but in the end it's just my opinion... (that i'll stick to. never buy a Hard Drive except you need at least double digit TB of storage)

Stick to Seagate, or Hitachi DeskStar

I would advise raid 1 plus a good backup, then whatever is best and most affordable for your needs.

Stick to Seagate, or Hitachi DeskStar

Toshiba makes good drives. A few models are louder than their competitors though, but otherwise they're very comparable. AFR is in-line with the rest.
Hitachi (HGST) is now owned by Western Digital btw, and I believe the newest deskstar model is from 2015 and only offered upto 5TB. I'd probably steer towards something more modern and available. WD EasyStore is a good cheap option with fantastic helium drives (WD white label) inside if you're lucky, and still good drives if you're not. + cheaper than buying internal drives, and can still be shucked to get the drive out if OP doesn't want to run it over USB.
