Just a thought...but many people have had success changing out the BIoS chip on these boards with FF but no boot...can find replacement chips on eBay...pull old one, replace with new...hope for the best.

Gigabyte made an awesome p45 in the X48 board but i think the price would be sky high if u could find one

Check out X38.

I did what you're doing with my last box. I went with X38 over the P45. Mostly wanted to see how far I could push the memory and bus. I flogged that poor NB. 771 Xeon mod works, but I had to update the microcode myself to get all the CPU functions (SSE versions) working.

Board was an Gigabyte X38T-DQ6

I think those 680s to 790 did best with dual cores, like e8400 and up. I had an evga 680i and a q6600, and man that board was complete junk, couldn't run @ stock clocks. Sold it to a guy who ran a dual core and had no problem. As for x38, x48.. I would go for Asus p45. I have an x48 and best I could pull off was about 475 fsb between 2 Yorkfieds. I might be able to squeeze 480 but I have to beat on her. The board did 600fsb with an e8600. Storm chaser here is able to run 500fsb on his 9650.. That's pretty badass, and about as good as it gets for 24/7 operation..

It's not about FSB Frequency.
It's about memory latency/bandwidth you get out of FSB you have.
Sure, low multi CPU will get limited in OC by lower FSB, however at this point there is no reason to NOT go x9 minimum multiplier on X38/X48 board.
Also, you can't run E5400/X5400 series Xeons on X38/X48. I used X3370 (Q9650 Xeon) and managed 491MHz FSB (without CPU destroying levels of Vcore/FSB Voltage) :
Cinebench R15 mini.png

I went as high as 520MHz FSB on my QX6850 :D

But that's how you build bandwidth, and lower latency is through fsb/strap settings. I have a ddr2 x48 board, every time I see ddr3 results I kick myself for not getting a newer version when I had the chance. Ill play with my old rig some more later, maybe I can dial in a little closer to 500.. I didn't spend a ton of time on it, since the last time I really played with it my kids were baby's lol. So about 7 years.. Also, I have a 3360, no x9 for me heheh. Dammit.

@freeagent DDR3 vs. DDR2 doesn't matter.
It's P45 yes, but I want to get this FSB vs. bandwidth + latency point across.
Best RAM.png

~10GB/s read/write/copy and 67ns = pretty good ?

Best FSB mini.png

Almost 11GB/s, but latency went 9.4 ns higher (that's over 10%).
