It is 2025, you have a PCI slot you really want to fill, what do you stick in it?

Not a terribly serious thread since it is just a silly idea I have, but: I have a museum piece of a system based on a Core 2 Extreme X6800. It has an unused PCI slot (another PCI is blocked by the bottom case fan, the PCIe x16 has a GPU and the PCIe x1 slot has a WiFi card) and for some weird reason I just want to fill it. What should I try to stick into it? The only real limitation is that whatever it is, it needs to have a Win10 driver available as the system is running W10 IoT LTSC.

Sound card seems to be the obvious answer, but since the system connects to a TV via HDMI it wouldn't really be used. Are there digital tuners on PCI that have a W10 driver? Any other ideas? Thanks for any suggestions for my silly idea!

Well pretty much a bunch of dated stuff that wouldn't be so useful on W10.

Maybe an Ageia physx card, but these are also made in PCI-E 4x format as well. And these cards can use NV physx drivers for modern operating systems, but if you have any NV card like an 8800 Ultra or something, you wouldn't need the physx card.

Just an example of what I might use the slot for on vintage hardware. :)

I would stick a TV card in there, might not be much fun if you cant change the channel though.. might defeat the purpose.

The one I had was from Sapphire, and I want to say I had an Nvidia that did it too, but that was a loong time ago.. getting fuzzy.. pretty sure I had one.. :D FX5200 maybe..?

PCI RAID card for some coffee perc action?

maybe something with video-in/recording ability?
think really depends on what you use the pc for.
for the past couple of years with lack of analog OTA, i started streaming tv thru sw, so no tv card needed anymore.

About sound card : ASUS Xonar has Windows 10 drivers.
From practical use... I'd say a USB card, or SATA controller.

More NIC's and second (or third) graphics card for passthrough. Some external power buttons also use a expansion slot.

A Windows 7 or Vista Driver should work if there are no 10 or 11 drivers for pci devices...

Hmm PCI, A Sound Card, a Ethernet or Wifi NIC or Hybrid unit, a USB expansion card, a scsi, ide or sata raid controller, TV tuner, capture card.

PCI? I would put a soundcard on it, specifically a good one like X-Fi Elite Pro, or Cantatis Overture 192, or Onkyo Wavio SE200

I still got an old M-Audio Delta 1010LT (pci) that works. Pretty badass to have before the external audio equipment was better. This thing ran a whole lot of amplitube and reason.

I bung an LSI SAS HBA in the second slot and a 10G SFP+ NIC in the third on my old rigs. The slots do need to have at least 4 lanes each.

Some good ideas here. I will probably pick a 4 port USB2.0 expansion board and stick it in there. More storage isn't really needed, and a sound card seems like a waste considering I just use the HDMI output to a TV setup.

For the folks proposing 10GbE NICs and NVMe expansion: None of this would work on a PCI slot, unfortunately.

Thanks everyone for indulging my OCD!

Every LGA 775 board that still hasn't failed. The OP has one. I have one too.

Among newer boards, a few Asus Pro models (A620M-C and H610M-C), and of course many industrial boards.

Since all good options known to a man (me specifically) had been covered I come here with a silly one.

Toothpicks. As many as you can fit there. And whatever device beneath it that can show a pair of numbers. Every time you're asked what the heck is this toothpick madness you increase the 1st number by 1. Every time you're asked what the heck is this number fiesta you also increase the 2nd by 1.

I am sure I saw a B650 board with 2 PCI slots.
Most likely an industrial board? My most modern boards with PCI are my two Asus Z170 ones, haven't seen any more modern one myself with PCI.

No it is a B650 from MSI. I want to say pro but I don't feel like looking it up right now.

I installed a low-profile Gigabit Ethernet card in a PCI slot to augment the 100K Ethernet on the motherboard. In an old server, I installed a PCI GPU, to free up PCIe slots for more important cards. If I look hard enough, I have some old AGP and ISA GPUs in a bit box. I think I still have one or two mobos with an ISA slot.

A V.90 Creative Modem Blaster! Then you can install some vintage fax software and make a landline phone out of your PC.

But personally I'd either add a Wi-Fi or Ethernet card there. :)
